The subject of this study is the architecture and figure of Mario Bacciocchi (Fiorenzuola d'Arda, 1902 - Milan, 1974), an architect who worked mainly in northern Italy in the first half of the 20th century, of whom, unfortunately, there is no comprehensive and complete literature to date. However, his legacy is indeed substantial, from the buildings that line the main streets of the city of Milan to the designs of the Agip service stations, located throughout the peninsula, an iconic symbol of his architecture and of the Italian post-World War II renaissance. Bacciocchi is best known to most as the trusted architect of Enrico Mattei, the founder of ENI: citing one example, their union gave birth to the Metanopoli district, which, conceived according to the garden-city model, settled in the Milanese suburbs as a futuristic urban experiment. Investigating the figure of Bacciocchi in more depth, one realizes that one is dealing with a multifaceted architect who was able to adapt to different commissions and projects while retaining his own distinctive trait and at the same time remaining posed and respectful toward the character of the places. The thesis work aims, therefore, to try to give a complete picture of his activity of which, as mentioned earlier, we have very little and fragmented information, thus attempting to provide a cataloguing of the major works of his architecture. So, an attempt was made to give an order and a collection of them: starting initially by finding sources from the archives, such as the Historical Archives of ENI, located in Castel Gandolfo, and the Cittadella degli Archivi of the municipality of Milan. Of invaluable importance were the interviews with his children, Giordano Bacciocchi and Elena Bottale Bacciocchi, who were fundamental in reconstructing some of their father's personal and working passages; and finally, the inspections in the cities that host the greatest number of his projects: Piacenza and Milan. The latter will serve as the backdrop for Bacciocchi's main works, which seem to be brought together through peculiar and common architectural elements that go on to link the two cities with a thread visible only through details. Although they have been all but forgotten by most, Bacciocchi's architectures have always served as the backdrop to our daily lives by posing quietly and elegantly, but despite this they have never been thoroughly analyzed and ordered. The present research stands, therefore, as an initial point for a deeper and more complete understanding of the architect and his legacy.

Abstract
The present research stands, therefore, as an initial point for a deeper and more complete understanding of the architect and his legacy.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
