The Space is something that has always been considered fascinating but tough to be understood. In fact, today, thanks to technological innovation, space is no longer considered just something to be discovered to satisfy the thirst for knowledge, but also something to leverage on to exploit new business opportunities for companies, startups, institutions, and the whole society. During the last years, a lot of discoveries and innovations have seen the light, all characterized by their relationship with what happens outside the Earth. In addition, many activities that characterize businesses and, more generally, daily life, such as satellite technologies for navigation, localization, and Earth observation, come from what is called the New Space Economy. Despite the fact that Space is a new sector in continuous evolution and expansion, it is necessary to understand how it fits into the more consolidated mechanisms of the world economy and, therefore, a fundamental aspect that allows the growth of the entire ecosystem is, obviously, that of the capital that revolves around it. Through a Qualitative Comparative Analysis based on a database that comprises a significant number of space startups, space investors and their relative rounds of investment, the study provides a comprehensive analysis about how the ecosystem works and the relationships between the characteristics of the companies operating in the market and the main aspects of the fundings provided. The main results of the thesis are represented by seven combinations of conditions that, if present in the DNA of a space startup, allow it to obtain success in its business, and in particular to get a structured and consistent financing round, that in fact is the output of our research.
