Venture capital in the world of software

This thesis is insert in a context of economic research with a particular attention to the economics of innovation. The main objective is to create an overall picture in the scope of the relationship between the world of venture capital and the business software irrespective of the fact that the latter presents a business model with proprietary software or open source software. In particular, we focused on the possible benefits given by the venture capital in the production of new software and patents. For performing this work in the best way has been done a review of the available literature. After I collected the data about new proprietary software released on the market and data on education background and experience of the entrepreneur. In addition to these two databases collected personally have been used three other databases previously available: the first relating to open source software released in the market, the second presents the data of venture capital and the last terms of patents produced by firms. Subsequently all these data were processed through the use of regression and, for the binary variables, the probit model. Were followed two main lines of analysis; the first one have shown that there is a significance in the relationship between the production of new software and patents, and the experience of venture capital. The second area of analysis has investigated the phenomenon of staging (which means dilution of funding over time); it seems to lead a decline in the production of software and patents. This presumably because giving less resources at once, the entrepreneur - founder of the company can not develop all the ideas the are present in his head. Given the breadth of topics covered, were not used data relating to the background of the entrepreneur, which, however, can be used for new future research, especially to explore the possible relationship between the release of new software features of the entrepreneur or his team.

Questo lavoro di tesi s’inserisce nell'ambito delle ricerche di tipo economico con una particolare attenzione al settore dell’economia dell’innovazione. L'obiettivo principale vuole essere quello creare un quadro complessivo nell ambito del rapporto tra il mondo delle venture capital e quello delle imprese software indipendentemente dal fatto che esse presentino un modello di business con software di tipo proprietario o di tipo open source. In particolare ci si è focalizzati sui possibili benefici apportati dalla venture capital alla produzione di nuovi software e brevetti. Per svolgere al meglio questo lavoro è stata fatta una rassegna della letteratura disponibile. In seguito sono stati raccolti dati inerenti all’emissione sul mercato di nuovi software di tipo proprietario e del bagaglio scolastico e dell esperienza del imprenditore. Oltre a questi due database raccolti personalmente sono stati utilizzati altri tre database in precedenza disponibili: il primo inerente ai software di tipo open source rilasciati sul mercato, il secondo presenta i dati delle venture capital mentre l'ultimo riguarda i brevetti prodotti dalle imprese considerate. In seguito tutti questi dati sono stati elaborati mediante l’utilizzo di regressione e, per le variabili binarie, del modello probit. Dal primo filone delle analisi statistiche risulta che vi è una significatività nel rapporto tra la produzione di nuovi software e brevetti e l'esperienza della venture capital. Il secondo ambito di analisi ha approfondito il fenomeno della diluizione dei finanziamenti nel tempo il quale sembra portare a un peggioramento nella produzione di software e brevetti questo presumibilmente perché dando meno risorse subito, non è possibile sviluppare tutte le idee dell’imprenditore - fondatore della società. Vista l'ampiezza degli argomenti trattati, non sono stati utilizzati i dati inerenti al background dell imprenditore, i quali però potranno essere utilizzati per nuove ricerche future, soprattutto per approfondire la possibile relazione tra il rilascio di nuovi software i le caratteristiche dell imprenditore o del suo team.
