World class manufacturing : an integrated framework to achieve excellence in safety

The following thesis is concerned with the study of World Class Manufacturing program and, in particular, of Safety Pillar. World Class Manufacturing (WCM) is a system of Japanese origin for the integrated management of all production aspects of a business organization based on improving efficiency. The Literature Review showed a lack regarding the analysis of the WCM Safety theme and in particular, a defined model for the WCM implementation is missing. Therefore, the output of this dissertation is a model on the Safety Pillar, consisting of six successive steps, which are distinguished by the approach typology (reactive, preventive and proactive) and an auditing system, aimed at assessing the level reached. Particular emphasis has been placed on the concept of culture in step 4: companies are becoming more and more aware of the fact that many injuries are the result of risky behaviour by the side of workers. The model was then validated by means of questionnaires distributed to experts in the field, or rather 15 managers who applied a WCM Safety System. On the other hand, the auditing system has been validated through Scientific Papers and White Papers edited by companies that have achieved excellent results in the field of safety at work. We then applied the model to a medium-sized company in the metalworking sector (Sacma Macchine per Lamiera S.p.A.). The six months at our disposal allowed us to implement Step 1, 2 and part of Step 4, in accordance with the WCM Master Plan defined in Step 0.

La seguente Tesi ha per oggetto lo studio del Programma del World Class Manufacturing e in particolare, del pilastro della Sicurezza. Il World Class Manufacturing (WCM) è un sistema di derivazione Giapponese per la gestione integrata di tutti gli aspetti produttivi di un’organizzazione aziendale basato sul miglioramento dell’efficienza. L’analisi della letteratura ha evidenziato un gap in merito alla tematica di sicurezza in ambito WCM, ed in particolare una mancanza totale di un modello strutturato per l’implementazione del World Class Manufacturing. L’output di questo lavoro di Tesi è un modello sul pilastro della Sicurezza, costituito da sei step successivi, che sono distinti per tipologia di approccio (reattivo, preventivo e proattivo) e da un sistema di auditing, mirato a valutare il livello raggiunto. Particolare enfasi è stata posta sul concetto di cultura nello step 4: si sta sviluppando sempre di più infatti la consapevolezza che molti infortuni sono la conseguenza di comportamenti a rischio da parte dei lavoratori. Il modello è stato poi validato tramite questionari rivolti ad esperti in materia, ovvero a 15 manager che hanno applicato un modello WCM in campo Sicurezza. Il sistema di auditing è stato validato invece tramite Scientific Papers e White Papers di aziende che hanno ottenuto risultati eccellenti in ambito di Sicurezza sul lavoro. Abbiamo poi applicato parte del modello ad una media impresa del settore metalmeccanico (Sacma Macchine per Lamiera S.p.A.). I sei mesi a nostra disposizione ci hanno permesso infatti di implementare lo Step 1, 2 e parte del 4, in accordo al Master Plan definito allo step 0.
