Amines are present in many biologically active molecules some of which are currently used both in agrochemical and pharmaceutical applications. Due to the importance of chirality for the biological effects of a molecule, the industry, in the few last decades, has been devoted to the development of new more efficient and cost effective procedures for the preparation of chiral molecule in a single enantiomeric form. Recently the introduction of organocatalysis (the use of small organic molecules as catalysts) has announced the possibility to avoid the use of potentially toxic metals in the production of drugs.
Se confrontata con i classici metodi di risoluzione racemica, la catalisi asimmetrica offre la possibilità di ottenere l'enantiomero desiderato con elevata purezza e resa altrettanto valida. Recentemente l'introduzione dell'organocatalisi, tecnica che prevede l'utilizzo di piccole molecole organiche con funzione di catalizzatore, ha annunciato la possibilità di evitare l'uso di metalli nella produzione di farmaci.
