How to make a difference. Toward a socially conscious design in the village of Abetenim, Ghana

This thesis started with the participation in an internship project in collaboration with the international NGO Nka Foundation. The program involved the enrolment in a workshop, organized during the summer of 2014 by the foundation itself, which focused on the construction of a red earth structure in the village of Abetenim, Ghana. Personal integration with the community and an ‘on site’ direct experience made it possible to collect information and data useful for the analysis of the interventions developed by Nka Foundation in the village. Of equal importance was the theoretical research conducted in order to gain a deeper comprehension of the context and of the sociological framework in which this experience could be incorporated. The aim of this work is the analysis of the different projects built in collaboration with the foundation, concentrating on the process and its impacts, to formulate suggestions that could respond to the question that lies underneath this whole work: "how to make a difference?" This research question was born out of our personal interest in understanding what it is exactly the effect that a volunteer like us is leaving on the local population. By connecting the used methodology and the characteristics of a project with the impacts it had on the context in which it was built, we further sought to understand what could be done in order to leave a greater impact.

Il presente elaborato di tesi nasce in seno alla partecipazione ad un progetto di tirocinio formativo in collaborazione con l’ONG internazionale Nka Foundation. Il programma consisteva nell'adesione ad un workshop organizzato nell’estate del 2014 dalla fondazione stessa riguardante la costruzione di una struttura in terra cruda presso il villaggio di Abetenim in Ghana. Grazie all’esperienza diretta sul campo e all’integrazione con la comunità è stato possibile ottenere informazioni e dati utili per un analisi degli interventi effettuati da Nka Foundation in questo villaggio. Altrettanto fondamentale è stata l’attività di ricerca teorica volta ad approfondire la conoscenza sul contesto e sull’inquadramento sociologico nel quale tale esperienza si inseriva. Scopo dell’elaborato di tesi è l’analisi dei progetti costruiti in collaborazione con la fondazione, soffermandosi in particolare sul processo e i suoi impatti, per arrivare alla formulazione di suggerimenti per poter rispondere alla domanda che sta alla base di tutto l’elaborato: “How to make a difference?” (Come fare la differenza?). La domanda di ricerca nasce dalla nostra personale voglia di capire cosa è effettivamente quello che un volontario come noi lascia a quella specifica popolazione. Mettendo in relazione la metodologia usata e le caratteristiche del progetto con gli impatti che lo stesso ha avuto sul contesto per cui è stato pensato, abbiamo cercato inoltre di capire come si potrebbe agire per lasciare il più possibile.
