The design of the multipurpose cultural center of artistic education and research “Dragon Yards”, born from the experience of the competition “Premio Compasso Volante 2013”, aims to offer Coloane, an island in the south of Macao, an opportunity for renewal through the settlement of new and compatible functions in the area of the former shipyards of the village of Lai Chi Vun, historical memory of the past trade in that region. The visit of the center is divided into three paths, with activities and facilities designed to offer users diversified and engaging experiences. The first one, called “Welcome & Art Show”, includes the Welcome Hall and Temporary Exhibitions with a panoramic promenade. The middle floor hosts the path “Perform & Relax”, with a Theatre, the Green Terrace and Exhibition Terraces. Lastly, the ground floor, called “Live & Love Macau”, consists of ten Atéliers, the Cultural Incubator and the Project Hostel. The architectural concept of the Dragon translates the preliminary research about the city and its symbolistic culture, and can be summarized in its most representative element: the environmental roof. It is characterized by a zinc-titanium laminate coating, a structural steel frame and a construction technology type S/E (structure/envelope), with use of innovative materials and technical solutions with high energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. In-depth studies about parameterization and the structural calculation of the coverage allowed to optimize resources and minimize the cost of the materials used; moreover the ergonomics design of the construction site was worked out to ensure the feasibility and safe execution of the construction processes. The pursuit of energy-efficiency was based on the study of natural ventilation, indispensable means to achieve high comfort levels and to reduce the need for cooling. Finally, the complexity of integrated content design was communicated to the public through the design of an Augmented Reality Interface, implemented thanks to the design by BIM software. Our research and experimentation activities were possible thanks to the collaboration with the two companies Huntman Polyurethanes - Tioxide Europe Srl, for the energy monitoring experience about a real case, and VELUX Italy SpA for their support to the implementation of VELUXlab Augmented Reality pilot project.
