Since almost twenty years, the Valtellina Professional Formation Center provide young people and adult a qualification in cooking, waitring, sewing, beauty services and construction fields. In the last few years, the number of students of the Sondrio School has arisen from a hundred to four hundred students. The building, located in Via Carlo Besta in the Northern part of the city and subject of this thesis, has undercome many interventions without any planning or long-term vision. As a result, aestheticism, functionality, comfort conditions and building’s energy consumption are now obsolete. The Provincia of Sondrio, responsible for the management of the PFP, has planned to retrofit the building, linking the main ideas of its projects to those of the volunteer-based protocol Valtellina Eco-Energy. This protocol is part of a larger scale program which targets the promotion of high energy efficiency interventions in Valtellina. The Politecnico di Milano – campus of Lecco, scientific partner of the project, contribute to this goal by proposing studies on particular buildings. The retrofit of the PFP Valtellina of Sondrio is one of them and is the subject of the thesis. The project not only deals with an energetic requalification but also aims to address comfort, functionality, space, safety and architectural image issues. The thesis is organized in 3 parts following the logical process that has characterized its development: Knowledge, Project and Details. The first part represents the basis of the thesis. It exposes the contest in which the project is inserted, that is to say the Valtellina and the city of Sondrio. The building itself is then studied, by presenting in detail the PFP center and its actual management. This section includes in particular a summary of the information gathered thanks to the help of the direction and teaching staff during a meeting we organized. It is followed by photographic, geometrical and technological reviews of the existing building, executed thanks to multiple inquiries on the site. A summary of the parallel researches we did to inform ourselves before actually starting the project concludes the Knowledge part. It includes a series of retrofits and ex-novo school case studies, a presentation of the wood material and an introduction to parametric architecture. The project’s section begins with the definition of the PFP conservation program. It is build on the basis of a critical analysis of the existing and the compilation of a series of demands expressed by the users. The program is then enriched with exogenous goals we considered mandatory to develop a sustainable project. It is followed by the architectural concept presentation centered on the morphogenesis of the project . The technological concept allows to define the resulting shape with much precision. It also defines the strategies we used to reach the objectives of the program and presents the construction and demolition interventions that are planned. The architectural graphics such as plans, sections and facades represent the golden part of this section, concluded by normative verifications and the report of our second evaluating meeting with the users of the PFP. The section dedicated to detail studies is made of five parts: energy, technology, structure, acoustics and buildings services. In the energy part, parametric tools such as the software Grasshopper have been used to study the influence of louvers and envelop characteristics on comfort and energy consumption. The parameters that define louvers and envelop have been optimized in regards to these criteria for one part of the building, controlling also the costs and the visual comfort. The technological section includes detailed sections of the most relevant zones of the building. They are elaborated on the basis of the previous energy study. The third study concerns the static dimensioning of the new part of the project made of a timber frame structure. In this chapter, different kind of floors and overall configurations are analyzed and lead to a choice based on static behavior, costs and architectural image. The next section deals with acoustics, which is a transversal theme very important for a school building. The last chapter ends with a study of building services, taking into account the results of the energy study to size the plant, always comparing different possibilities before choosing a particular system.
Esso applica in particolare i risultati ottenuti nello studio energetico.
