Istanbul integration incubator. A new integration center to foster the harmonious developement of a mega city

Istanbul is the symbol of the welcoming city. Indeed for centuries it has been a social hotpot capable to make different cultures and religions living together. The city built itself upon migrations originated both nationally and internationally. The beauty and mystery of Istanbul probably lies in this rich layering of societies that superposed and overlapped during its history. However in the last decades the pace of migration drastically increased. As many other European cities during the XIXth and XXth century it is undergoing a rural exodus. Hundreds of thousands people have been arriving yearly in Istanbul to search for better perspectives than those they could find in their home region. Besides, the recent events happening in Syria, and more generally in the middle east triggered an additional wave of migration. In both case the population that arrives in Istanbul is scarcely educated and skilled. For that reason these migrants are preferred target for low-skilled black market activities. Considering the population size and the related social, economical and infrastructural issues it is a priority for Istanbul to think about their integration. The complexity of the phenomenon requires many layers and actors of the society to take part in the debate. Architecture, as intermediate between society and physical space has a key role to play there. The Istanbul Integration Incubator suggests an answer to this issue. The building does not try to be a shelter for migrants activity but the actor itself of integration. The rich program aims at creating connections between, people, places and ideas. At the scale of the building, the project targets to reproduce the complexity of the city. Indeed integration is though to be the result of cooperation between stakeholders of a given society. As a building for the poor, it was designed to be economically and socially sustainable, knowing the low economic power of the end-users.

Istanbul è il simbolo della città accogliente. In effetti per secoli è stata capace di far’ vivere insieme diverse culture e religioni. La città si è costruita se stessa a traverso migrazione nazionale e internazionale. La bellezza e l’energia dell’Istanbul di oggi probabilmente risulta dell’accumulazione delle tracce di queste società e culture che si sono incrociate nel tempo. Ciononostante, negli ultimi decenni, la velocità e l’importanza delle migrazione ha drammaticamente cresciuto. Come altre città durante il XIX e XX secolo, sta attraversando un esodo rurale. Centinai di magliaie di persone arrivano annualmente a Istanbul per ricercarci un futuro migliore. Inoltra, gli eventi recenti in Siria, e in generale nel medio oriente, hanno creato un’altra onda di migrazione. In entrambi casi, le popolazione che arrivano sono poco educate e qualificate. Per questa ragione i migranti sono un bersaglio preferito per il lavoro informale. Considerando l’importanza delle popolazione e dei problemi sociali e economici correlati, è una priorità per Istanbul di pensare alla loro integrazione. La complessità dei fenomeni richiede la partecipazione al dibattito di diverse attori. L’architettura, come intermedio tra società e spazio fisico ha un ruolo chiave da giocare. L’Istanbul Integration Incubator suggerisce una risposta a questo problema. L’edificio non prova ad essere un rifugio per migranti ma invece ad essere l’attore della loro integrazione. Il ricco programma vuole creare connessioni tra gente, posti e idee. Alla scala dell’edificio, il progetto ripropone la complessità della città. In effetti l‘integrazione è pensata come risultante dalla cooperazione tra gli attori di una data società. Conoscendo il basso potere economico dei futuri utenti, il progetto è stato disegnato per essere sostenibile socialmente ed economicamente.
