Rinnovare per conservare. Il caso studio del campus di Veterinaria a Città Studi

The aim of this thesis is to develop the key elements that represent the basis of a renovation design. The subject of the design proposal is the Veterinary Campus, located in Città Studi in Milan, that will be transfer to Lodi. The idea that is being pursued is to realize a new and different scenario for this area, that has always hosted the main places of higher education. The ability of the University to act as a pole of attraction is a resource to open the Campus to the City and to create dynamic relationships within the urban logic. The study started from the work carried out during the course of “Progettazione Edilizia Integrata Recupero” in the academic year 2012-2013, where the theme was precisely the renovation of the Veterinary Campus. The first issue that has been addressed is an historical background of the Universities in Milan, and more precisely of the Campus, identifying, through the years of realization of the buildings, the construction techniques used at that time. The operations of geometric survey have been conducted and at the same time it was possible to determine the level of degradation of the structures. This last part in particular has led to detect that the edifices are in good conditions, thus giving the possibility of preserving the attitude of the Campus in most fields: morphological, organizational and aesthetic. A second phase of primary importance was the analysis of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats within the study area, as it has led to the re-functioning of the whole space: the buildings and the park in which they are located. The purpose and the difficulty of this moment was to unhinge the rigid monofunctionality currently present, in order to open the area to the city and satisfy the requests identified by the students. This content is actualized providing them spaces that integrated with each other are intended to meet a web of interests ranging from cultural activities to educational activities, activities aimed at preparing students for the future, the work’s environment, up to the most simple meeting place for young people. From this preparatory phase a series of focuses are developed, analyzing in more detail the area of the Campus where it has been hypothesized the most number of changes. It roughs out in this regard the construction of a glass walkway in metal structure that connects the two buildings, chosen as exhibition spaces. This element is studied in every field: structural, technological, aesthetic and plant design. A second thematic focus is the energetic sphere: first, it has been applied a building renovation through the use of the software Sefaira and then the evaluation of thermal comfort under a cover, made of glass and steel.

L’intento di questo elaborato è quello di sviluppare gli elementi cardine che stanno alla base di un progetto di rifunzionalizzazione, elaborando una proposta per il Campus di Veterinaria situato a Città Studi a Milano, per il quale è previsto un trasferimento presso Lodi. L’idea che viene perseguita è quella di concretizzare un nuovo scenario di sviluppo per un’area come questa, che da sempre ospita le principali sedi dell’alta formazione, cercando di sfruttare le attitudini dell’Università di fungere da polo attrattore e innescando dinamiche di relazione anche all’interno della logica urbana. Si è partiti dal lavoro che è stato sviluppato durante il corso di “Progettazione Edilizia Integrata Recupero” durante l’anno accademico 2012-2013, la cui tematica era appunto la rifunzionalizzazione della sede di Veterinaria. Il primo aspetto che è stato affrontato è un inquadramento storico delle Università a Milano e più precisamente del Campus, risalendo agli anni di realizzazione degli edifici ed identificando in questo modo anche le tecniche costruttive utilizzate all’epoca. Da qui si sono condotte operazioni di rilievo sia in ambito geometrico che in ambito di diagnosi del livello di degrado. Quest’ultima parte ha portato a rilevare che le strutture esistenti sono in buono stato, dando così la possibilità di attuare una conservazione dell’impronta dell’area in ambito morfologico, organizzativo ed estetico. Una seconda fase di primaria importanza è stata l’analisi di Forze, Debolezze, Minacce e Opportunità relativamente al contesto urbano in cui si trova la sede accademica. Essa ha condotto alla rifunzionalizzazione vera e propria dell’intera area del Campus: dagli edifici al parco in cui si collocano. L’obiettivo e la difficoltà di questa analisi è stato quello di scardinare la logica di rigida monofunzionalità attualmente presente, in modo tale da aprire la zona alla città ed esaudire le esigenze riscontrate dagli studenti. In quest’ottica si mettono a loro disposizione spazi che integrati tra di loro mirano a soddisfare un intreccio di interessi e bisogni che spaziano da attività culturali ad attività didattiche ad attività mirate alla preparazione degli universitari al futuro, al mondo del lavoro, fino ad arrivare al più semplice punto di ritrovo per i giovani. Da questa fase propedeutica sono stati sviluppati poi una serie di focus tematici, analizzando in modo più dettagliato la zona del Campus in cui si sono concentrati il maggior numero di cambiamenti. Si delinea in questo senso la costruzione di una passerella pedonale vetrata in struttura metallica che va a collegare due edifici, cui viene affidata la nuova funzione di spazi espositivi. La passerella viene dettagliatamente studiata in ogni aspetto: strutturale, tecnologico, estetico ed impiantistico. Un secondo focus tematico è stato quello energetico, applicato ad una riqualificazione degli edifici presi in esame tramite l’utilizzo del software Sefaira ed alla valutazione del comfort termo-igrometrico al di sotto di una copertura in acciaio e vetro, anch’essa di nuova costruzione e ipotizzata al centro dell’area.
