The Michigan State University and the U.S. Department of Energy are now building a new particle accelerator for the nuclear physics . One of the most complex component of this accelerator is the beam dump , whose function is to stop and cool the powerful isotope beams . My work at the french research institut IMFT consisted in a theoretical and computationl thermo-hydrauilc study of this component in order to foresee the effects of the beams on the titanium's walls of the beam dump. The scientists of the Michigan State University will then build the component keeping in mind our computationl results. I mostly worked with Matlab for the theoretical part and with a CFD software called NEPTUNE_CFD for the computational part of the results. It has been for me a great experience and a thecnological challenge because this particular type of beam dump will be the first of his kind to be built.
Questa tesi è stata svolta nell'istituto di ricerca francese IMFT (Institut de Mécanique des Fluides de Toulouse) e ha riguardato lo studio termo e fluidodinamico di un componente (chiamato beam dump) facente parte dell'acceleratore di particellle che l'università del Michigan sta ora costruendo. Questo beam dump è un tamburo alimentato ad acqua il cui obiettivo è quello di bloccare e raffreddare i raggi ad isotopi dell'acceleratore. Quindi questo studio ha riguardato i trasferimenti termodinamici sulla parete esterna del beam dump per verificare se effettivamente l'acqua , che attraversa diversi regimi di ebollizione, sia effettivamente in grado di assorbire l'elevata potenza trasmessa dai raggi di isotopi (circa 400kW) .
