Transition to long term planning in family business : the role of management control and information systems

Family firms, as well as large companies, need to take on a more structured and long-term oriented management approach. This implies for a familyowned commpany a transition process from a kind of management based on urgency to one characterized by a long-term planning orientation. The literature highlights the importance of this aspect for the survival and success of this kind of companies, even if there is not a defined model suggesting how to approach in the practice this evolution process. In this optic the aim of this research is to provide a framework, which integrates the elements emerged from the literature, stressing the importance and the role played by the Management Control System and by the Information System, combining them with the identification of key facilitators elements for the transition process. All these aspects are evaluated not only from an academic point of view, but also from a practical one since the methodology used during the development of this thesis follows the Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach: all the presented information has been obtained through the direct involvement into the daily activities of a family business. This direct involvement has been fundamental in order to test the defined model and to obtain final results.

Le aziende a conduzione familiare, al pari delle grandi aziende, necessitano sempre più un approccio manageriale più strutturato e orientato al lungo periodo. Ciò implica per le family business un processo di transizione da uno stile manageriale basato sull'urgenza verso uno caratterizzato dall'orientamento verso il lungo periodo. La letteratura evidenzia l'importanza di questo aspetto per la sopravvivenza e per il successo di questa particolare tipologia di aziende, anche se non è possibile trovare un modello che suggerisce come approcciare nella pratica tale processo evolutivo. In quest'ottica lo scopo di questa tesi è quello di fornire un modello che integri gli elementi emersi dalla letteratura, sottolineando l'importanza e il ruolo coperto dai sistemi di controllo di gestione e dai sistemi informativi aziendali, combinandoli con l'identificazione di elementi facilitatori chiave per il processo di transizione. Tutti questi aspetti sono stati valutati non solo dal punto di vista accademico, ma anche dal punto di vista pratico, dal momento che la metodologia utilizzata durante lo sviluppo della tesi segue l'approccio chiamato Participatory Action Research: tutte le informazioni presentate sono state ottenute mediante il diretto coinvolgimento nella attività quotidiane di un'azienda a conduzione familiare. Tale conivolgimento diretto è stato fondamentale al fine di testare il modello definito e ottenere i risultati finali.
