Un racconto di spazi in attesa. Esplorazioni nella Milano residenziale degli anni '50-'60

The thesis is the sum of a research brought on for one year upon the topic of residential open spaces from the ‘50s and ‘60s: how were they developed, how are they conceived today, how are they used and how can they be exploited for the future. From the general interest of the city’s expansion in the postwar period and in the booming economy, trough the interpretation and confrontation of cartography and urban plans, the aim is to describe parts of the city and urban blocks that have not yet been studied. The thesis is divided in three parts: in the first part there is the work made on the city of Milan, the comparisons of maps of the second half of the twentieth century and urban plans; in the second part a deep reading of eight case studies, residential blocks with open plan; in the third part the design of architectures and installations for the awaiting spaces. The work here presented is to be understood as a narration, both in the reflection upon the bibliography, from which we have borrowed maps and analysis of the city, both in the visions in the experimentation field. The design outcome is the result of a reflection on the meaning of the spaces taken into consideration, and upon what these are leaving as a legacy to the city of today.

La tesi raccoglie una ricerca sul tema degli spazi aperti condominiali degli anni ’50 e ’60: come sono stati sviluppati, come si presentano oggi, come vengono utilizzati e quali utilizzi potranno avere in futuro. Dall’interesse per l’espansione della città negli anni del secondo dopoguerra e del boom economico, attraverso la lettura e il confronto di cartografie e piani urbanistici, si vogliono raccontare parti di città ed isolati urbani ancora non studiati. La tesi è divisa in tre parti: nella prima parte si trova il lavoro sulla città di Milano, i confronti delle mappature del secondo ‘900 e i piani urbanistici; nella seconda parte una lettura approfondita di otto casi studio, isolati residenziali ad impianto aperto; nella terza parte delle suggestioni progettuali, interventi e allestimenti, di spazi in attesa. Il lavoro di ricerca è inteso come un racconto, sia nelle riflessioni rispetto alle narrazioni disciplinari, da cui abbiamo preso in prestito mappature e letture della città, sia nelle esplorazioni rispetto ai campi di sperimentazione. L’esito progettuale è il risultato di una riflessione sul significato degli spazi presi in considerazione, e su cosa questi lascino ineredità alla città di oggi.
