ABSTRACT In recent years, the number of wireless sensor network deployments for real life applications has rapidly increased. As sensor nodes are generally battery-powered devices, the energy problem remains one of the major barrier somehow preventing the complete exploitation of this technology. The critical aspects to face concern how to reduce the energy consumption of nodes so that the network lifetime can be extended to reasonable times. In this work, we first break down the energy consumption for the components of a typical sensor node, and discuss the main directions to energy conservation in WSNs. Then, we present a systematic and comprehensive taxonomy of the energy conservation schemes, which are subsequently discussed in depth. The main focus of this thesis is primarily on duty cycling schemes which represent the most compatible technique for energy saving and we also focus on the data-driven approaches that can be used to improve the energy efficiency; then some experiments have been reviewed and discussed. Finally, we will review some communication protocols proposed for sensor networks.
