Magnetic bearing technology has become an established reality in all those industrial applications that require functional unities that aim to provide high performance, absence of friction and high speed combined with low costs of maintenance. This piece of work aims to give a comprehensive overview of the subject of magnetic levitation bearings, by analyzing in the first place the differences between this innovative technology and the older one (based on mechanical magnetic bearings) and by mentioning the advantages that are expected by the use of magnetic levitation bearings in contexts in which until now classical magnetic bearings have been used. Secondly, some of the physical principles that govern the mechanism of levitation will be taken into account. Afterwards, the different types of magnetic bearings present on the market will be illustrated, in order to better explain the functioning principles, the performances, the problems and the future developments expected for each of them. In the concluding part of this work, some of the concrete applications of this technology in different industrial sectors will be mentioned, in order to give an example of the technical and economical advantages that the use of magnetic levitation bearings can provide. In writing this investigation, which starts from technical studies and arrives at functional and economical observations, important scientific and academic publications on the topic have been consulted, in order to acquire a theoretical basis for a state of the art analysis.
La tecnologia a cuscinetti magnetici è diventata ormai una realtà consolidata in tutte quelle applicazioni industriali che richiedono unità funzionali aventi come obiettivi imprescindibili: elevato rendimento, assenza di attrito, e velocità molto elevate a fronte di limitati costi in termini di manutenzione. L’obiettivo di questo elaborato è quello di fornire una panoramica più esaustiva sul tema dei cuscinetti a levitazione magnetica, analizzando in primo luogo le differenze che sussistono rispetto alle più classiche tipologie di cuscinetti meccanici, ed i vantaggi che è lecito aspettarsi dal loro utilizzo nei medesimi settori dove sinora sono stati impiegati cuscinetti meccanici. In secondo luogo, analizzerà alcuni principi fisici che costituiscono le fondamenta su cui si basa la levitazione nel campo dei cuscinetti. Successivamente verranno illustrate le diverse tipologie presenti sul mercato, approfondendo i principi di funzionamento, le prestazioni, le problematiche e gli sviluppi futuri per ogni classe esposta. In ultimo, nella parte conclusiva si passeranno in rassegna alcune di applicazioni di questa tecnologia presenti in diversi settori industriali dove poter apprezzare i vantaggi, di natura tecnica che economica, che i cuscinetti magnetici sono in grado di offrire. Nello svolgimento dell’elaborato sono state esaminate alcune delle più importanti pubblicazioni scientifiche e accademiche sull’argomento, con l’intento di sviluppare un’analisi dello stato dell’arte attuale partendo da uno studio fisico ed approdando ad una breve analisi funzionale ed economica.
