Building performance on capabilities in EPC supply chains : the case of Italian valve producers in power and oil & gas sectors

The aim of this work is to create a decisional support for supply chain configuration of special valve supplying companies, working in Power and Petroleum industries. Nowadays, since outsourcing is representing an always more usual habit for almost any company, Supply Chain Management (SCM) is becoming a more and more important function for acquiring efficiency and effectiveness, in order to enter and/or grade the market. This research collects and analyses data from a sample of first tier suppliers: they have direct relationships with main contractors and purchase materials and components from second tier suppliers. The main investigated aspect is the configuration adopted by best performers companies working in this field. The study has been encouraged by ANIMP (Associazione Nazionale di Impiantistica Industriale), in order to allow Italian valve producers maintaining achieved competitiveness, as well as increasing their technical and organizational skills.

L’obiettivo di questa tesi è quello di creare un supporto decisionale per la configurazione delle supply chain di aziende produttrici di valvole speciali, operanti all’interno dei settori Power and Oil&Gas. Dato che l’outsourcing rappresenta uno strumento sempre più abituale per ogni azienda, negli ultimi tempi il Supply Chain Management (SCM) sta acquisendo rilevanza come veicolo per guadagnare in efficienza e efficacia, al fine di immettersi ed emergere nel mercato. Il campione di ricerca è costituito da un gruppo di fornitori first-tier: tali fornitori coltivano relazioni dirette con il contraente principale (main contractor) e acquistano materiali e componenti dai fornitori second-tier. L’aspetto investigato più a fondo è costituito dalle configurazione adottate dalle compagnie ritenute best performers operanti nel settore. Questo studio è stato promosso e incoraggiato da ANIMP (Associazione Nazionale di Impiantistica Industriale), al fine di supportare i produttori di valvole e quadri italiani nel conservare la loro competitività e nell’incrementare le loro capacità tecniche ed organizzative.
