Life in the sub-Saharan region of Africa is influenced by one main factor: poverty. As it is clear, it cannot be divided from the living conditions that have seriously worsened in the last few years because of the dramatic increase in the population. Paupers find themselves forced to live precariously in informal settlements, the slums. This research focuses on the Republic Of Kenya especially on the city of Nairobi, which, having one of the highest slum-dwellers rate in the world, has nearly catastrophic living condition. The study is carried on by deepening all the peculiarities of these settlements and focusing mostly on what has been done to improve this situation: the slum upgrading projects. We concentrated on the Mathare 4A Upgrading Programme, aiming at analysing its building characteristics and performances. EnergyPlus Weather data file is used as the starting point of every analyses carried out using the software DesignBuilder. These simulations are set to consider only natural ventilation disregarding any other HVAC system. It is thus possible to gather the data about the internal conditions such as temperature and relative humidity. Three approaches are used to determine the comfort zone of the internal environment: the Fanger’s Predicted Mean Vote method, the adaptive thermal comfort by Auliciemss and De Dear and the building bioclimatic chart developed by Givoni. Such analyses provide the percentage of hours within the comfort range and also the amount of degree-hours whose temperature exceeds these values. Aside from that, Life Cycle Assessment LCA is employed to perform an audit of embodied energies and CO2 emission was also done on building envelope technology material. The same housing units have then been studied employing different types of material and building technology, to prove how profoundly living conditions are influenced by such choices and to propose alternatives useful in improving the comfort of the inhabitants.
