Youth center in urban ruins

This thesis starts from the observation of urban movement - in particularly the squatting movement which had became prevalent in Europe recent years. These struggles on public spaces which often led by the young generation are driven by their utopian vision against the dominant functionalist practice of city planning. Such urban movements brought about the dissolution of boundaries between public and private space and questioned the architects’ role in urban space design. With the proposal of a youth centre where living and working were collapsed into one equipped surface, the aim of the project is to respond the squatters’ protests and at the same time find a possible solution to cope with the unemployment issue of the young graduates. As the youth centre take place in an abandoned building in Milan, the goal is also to rediscover the potential value of vacant buildings which coincide with the squatters’ intention of perserving decaying cityscapes. In order to find a new typologies in social housing and co-working space, the thesis goes through studies on the use of grid in architecture and interior space. By introducing a open frame structure, the occupants will be liberated of constraints of architecture and gain total freedom in an autonomous environment.

Negli spazi pubblici delle nostre città vi è un fermento di attività urbane, dove "occupare lo spazio pubblico" è un tema molto importante. I giovani ricoprono un ruolo chiave all'interno di questi movimenti urbani. Gli obiettivi principali della loro partecipazione sono il raggiungimento della parità dei diritti, il mantenimento dei loro benifici, la ricerca della libertà democratica e di uguaglianza. Molto spesso occupano gli edifici abbandonati e li trasformano assecondandoli alle proprie esigenze, utilizzandoli sia per scopi abitativi che come spazi per organizzare eventi. Questa tesi prende spunto da questo fenomeno e analizza come sia possibile utilizzare le risorse presenti nel contesto urbano per aiutare a risolvere le esigenze abitative e professionali dei giovani laureati oltre ad affrontare il tema del riutilizzo delle infrastrutture incomplete o abbandonate. Da questa ricerca potrà trarne vantaggio l'intera comunità giovanile, la quale potrà usufruire di questi spazi come centri culturali e di aggregazione raggiungendo quegli obiettivi di condivisione e uguaglianza.
