This thesis has been a journey rather than a destination. I have always believed design is much more than a mere tool to project products or things, for me it has the power to transform; people, communities and reality. Everything that I have learned in the past three years in the MSc. PSSD has surely confirmed my hunch. Since I was very little, I always felt compelled to defend and empower women; from my mom to friends and even strangers. This is probably why I naturally gravitated towards the topic of Gender Inequality. Though major strides have been made, today’s reality cannot really be called “fair” for women. Whether speaking about career opportunities, wages or general rights, the contemporary world still fails to deliver an equal treatment for the female population. And these issues should concern everyone, not just women or feminists. Apart from the people and families that are suffering now, economies and societies will pay the consequences of Gender Inequality in the next years, if we do not collectively take action. This thesis offers a historical analysis on the topic of women’s rights and inequality over the past 5000 years, also showcasing the possible origins and causes that shape the present biases and residual female segregation. Followed by a study of the current largest online communities and trends for female advocacy. This project tries to answer the proposed question: How can Service Design help bridge the Gender Gap? Leveraging on service design, social innovation and a lean startup approach, the core idea is the deployment of a service for collaborative women empowerment with the ultimate goal of bridging wage & gender gap and enable bottom-up innovation in diverse contexts and countries. We Empower Women, the project’s practical application, is a system of services, which starts with the implementation of an online platform for open discussion and consultation of successful female role models. This constructive storytelling is introduced with the goal of counteracting the negative stereotypes and “model” images present across the media nowadays. WEW also provides a series of toolkits to help women enable growth and empowerment within themselves first and later in the working sphere. But it does not end there. As a matter of fact, these two services are only the tip of the iceberg. The vision goes far beyond…
