Oratio. Strumento visuale per il confronto del linguaggio politico

Starting from 1950s, the use of digital tools and techniques has increased within the field of humanities: the field of Digital Humanities has been introduced. Thanks to the evolution related to the computational world, great results have been achieved, but still a number of obstacle need to be overcame in order to make these part of the humanists workflow. Some research show that a portion of humanists is strongly interested into the learning and application of the new digital methods, but it is still stocked in front of a bunch complicated and bad-documented tools. The aim of this project is to describe the state of the art of the interface for Digital Humanities and to lay the foundations for a new tool designed for political language comparison, thanks to the visual analysis of political speeches: historians and linguists form the main target are the profiles most into this kind of research, useful in order to describe the politician and the personalities of a certain moment of the history, as well as to get the interest and the hot topics of that society. The comparison process envisages the use of visualizations able to combine data coming from different corpora of speeches and able to introduce a new methodology, taken, in part, from the analytic journalism: even this field has been forced to absorb the new technologies and to develop a new workflow, which is functional to new needs and possibilities. Still, many humanists feel uncomfortable in front of these new technological resources, some for a difficult understanding, some for a different point of view. A partire dai primi anni 50 gli studi degli umanisti hanno assistito ad un progressivo aumento dell’utilizzo di strumenti e tecniche digitali a sostegno della loro ricerca: nascono così le Digital Humanities. I risultati raggiunti grazie alle evoluzioni legate al mondo della computazione sono indubbiamente notevoli, ma ci sono ancora molti ostacoli da superare per far si che questi funzionino a pieno regime ed entrino a far parte nel flusso di lavoro dell’umanista. Alcune ricerche mostrano come una parte degli umanisti sia fortemente interessata all’apprendimento di questi metodi digitali, ma rimanga bloccata di fronte a strumenti troppo complicati o documentati male. Lo scopo di questo progetto è quello di descrivere lo stato dell’arte in ambito di interfacce per le Digital Humanities e di gettare le basi di un nuovo strumento pensato per il confronto del linguaggio politico attraverso l’analisi visuale di discorsi politici: gli storici e i linguisti sono le principali figure interessate a questo genere di studi, utili per descrivere non solo i personaggi politici al centro di un certo momento storico, ma anche per ricostruire le visioni del mondo, gli interessi e i temi caldi della società di allora. Il processo di confronto prevede l’utilizzo di visualizzazioni che combinano i dati provenienti da diverse raccolte di discorsi e che introducono una metodologia derivata da quella del giornalismo analitico: anche questa materia può essere considerata umanistica, ma, a differenza di altre, proprio per la sua natura, è stata costretta ad assorbire prontamente le nuove tecnologie e a sviluppare un flusso di lavoro funzionale. Molte figure umanistiche sembrano trovarsi non a loro agio di fronte a queste nuove risorse tecnologiche, chi per una difficile comprensione, chi per una differente linea di pensiero. Tramite Oratio, la piattaforma progettata, si cerca di creare una connessione fra le vecchie modalità di ricerca, basate sulla lettura ravvicinata dei testi, e le nuove possibilità offerte dal mondo del digitale che sfruttano la lettura distante e la visualizzazione delle informazioni.
