Toward the methodology for reuse of Caravanserai, the case of Iran and Turkey. Golnaz Salehi Mourkani, 26 cycle Abstract Preserving historical heritage through its usage and sustainability encouraged Middle Eastern countries, including Iran and Turkey, to focus on reuse of historical masons. Since these both countries are located alongside the historical trade paths and Silk Road, they benefit from a large group of historical heritage, i.e. caravanserais, dispersed inside and outside the cities. Although the studied samples in this research show that caravanserais under supervision of historical heritage organizations in Iran and Turkey were reused from the middle of 20th century, but most samples and effective practices belong to about one decade before. A supportive organization for private sector was established and its effective activities were started in 2009 in Iran, and in 2002 it empowered in Turkey (Bozdogan, 2012). Studies in Iran show that there are no transparent definitions for reserving historical works and reuse of them compatible to today’s needs of Iran yet. As one of the researchers said, reserving and reusing historical heritage is a dilemma in many Islamic communities. This caused some limited reuse from some Iranian caravanserais. Generally, lack of a transparent definition for reuse causes either waving reuse potentials according to modern needs or limitations for users of historical heritage. These limitations are less in Turkey, so reuse of historical heritage in Turkey is not limited to touristic applications. The subject of this thesis is addressing reuse of historical heritage of caravanserais in Iran and Turkey, by analyzing the applied methods in favor of these masons. The outcome of this research is recognition of common usage methods of caravanserais regarding to their historical values, including symbolic/conceptual and associated values, social value and reuse value which led to reuse of them as hotels and museum, commercial centers, and by local needs, or governmental decision. These recognized methods of usage of caravanserais, mentioned in “General Case Studies” section, are common. The other outcome of this research is recovering historical documents in processing initial reuse cases in Iran and Turkey, which led to recognition of this historical process, selected policies for reuse of caravanserais in Iran, and selected policies in the first systematic reuse in Turkey at early of publicity. Finally, this research introduces the organized process of reuse of caravanserais.
Toward the methodology for reuse of Caravanserai, the case of Iran and Turkey.
