Recent evidence shows that the world population over 65 is increasing rapidly at a rate of 800, 000 per month. With the growing number of elderly with special needs, there has been a larger demand for the nursing homes and elderly residential houses. Living in the large places such as nursing homes demands special facilities such as guiding tours in order to navigate easily inside the indoor environment. As studies, presents the popularity of smartphones is increasing between the senior citizens. Therefore, they can be a good potential at providing assistive technology for the elderly. One of the key roles of smartphones in the last years is being the personal navigation assistant. This thesis, as part of the Alma project , which considers as applicative scenarios those of caring homes, aims at providing an indoor navigation map, which is semantically enriched in order to support indoor navigation for elderly who are living in the caring homes. The state of the art is devoted to the usage of semantic annotation in the navigation systems. Therefore, firstly the subject of semantic annotation is investigated from the digital humanities point of view that semantic annotation is a key factor in the projects associated to it. Subsequently, the navigation systems, particularly the indoor navigation systems, have been studied. Two significant aspect of navigation systems which have been evaluated in this study are; firstly, retrieving and storing the spatial data. Secondly, the approaches used in order to provide user the navigation information with the semantic annotation. Finally, the factors, which are, should be considered in creating the new technology for the senior citizens has been investigated. Afterward, the spatial data model based on the features of the indoor environment has been modelled and designed. The spatial data has been retrieved from the IndoorGML map. IndoorGML map presents the geometrical features data of the building. Finally, the indoor navigation map was designed and implemented, which provides user the navigation information and points of interest and assists her through navigation in the indoor space.
