The theme initials from the phenomenon of confliction between on-street activities and automobile traffic on Chinese historical streets. The concept of traffic calming born in Europe is introduced as a potentially effective solution responding to this issue. The paper will focus on contemporary traffic calming strategies in Italian historical streets. After a series of case studies based on traffic calming and urban design theory, the paper tries to make a summary and then come to conclusions about general ideas on traffic calming strategies which balance the two functions of street, namely being as movement route and as public realm accommodating various kinds of activities.
