Abstract
Cold-formed thin-walled profiles are mostly used for the design and production of pallet rack structures, which are used for storing goods on pallets. The receptacle structures have common characteristics, even for different geometries and structure sizes. Such commonalities are the bracings – both longitudinal and transversal. Furthermore, recently, the design of pallet structures is often assisted by testing in designated laboratories, which has led to net improvements of the knowledge on their behavior. Consequently, this has open the way to further possibilities of structural optimization during the design phase. There are, however, other relevant aspects that can furnish more guidelines towards a more optimal design process. The removal of the longitudinal bracings in order to give way to devices that lead to a more rigid beam-to-column connection, placed in suitable locations, can be used as an example of more optimal design. Such type of devices and the influence they exercise on the structural behavior, while permanent and seismic loads are acting upon the pallet racks, is the scope of this master thesis. The structural response of a certain number of receptacle structures, each with different geometry and size and different location of where the special devices are inserted, is evaluated. Such study provides the values of the load carrying capacity of the uprights and the lateral displacements. The data obtained is then used to do a comparative analysis that aims at giving precise indications, that are of practical interest, as to how better design solutions can be obtained both in economic and behavioral terms compared with the standard use of longitudinal bracings. Furthermore, the results are commented with the scope of being able to propose further indications as to how to treat retrofitting problems of existing pallet racks subject to earthquake excitation. The appendices contain the adopted structural models, the code used to elaborate the structural analysis output data and the comparative analysis tables.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
