The thesis investigates and examines the issue of the holy as a category of "space". Festivals, processions, myths, celebrations, but also shrines, crucifixes, altars, aediculae, are the elements through which it occurs: the ephemeral, as the permanent, is linked to the history and to the identity of the environment. The religious feast is the dynamic, collective and temporary dimension of the static forms of the city. The aim is to demonstrate, through the tools of architectural language, the influence and the importance that festivals play on territory, because they change, temporarily, its forms, uses and meanings. In the first part I investigate the Sicilian festivals and their relationship with the city, understanding both the "staging", made up of devices, sets and symbolic elements, and the link with tradition, and especially with the Baroque period . The second part analyzes the case study: the Feast of S.Agata in Catania. The video-photographic documentation becomes the instrument for capturing the spectacularity and the social meaning of the patron’s feast, as well as the design of the "masterplan" reveals the inextricable relationship between the shape of the city and this complex ritual machine made of chaotic flows and movements encoded , equipment fixed and mobile protagonists, light scenes and urban perspectives. The festival is part of the city itself. Finally, it is necessary to emphasize the awareness of the complexity of the subject, and the impossibility to deal with every of its single aspect through this research; however, this work aims to act as a tool for understand and interpretate the feast as an unique heritage for the identity of this territory.

Abstract
Finally, it is necessary to emphasize the awareness of the complexity of the subject, and the impossibility to deal with every of its single aspect through this research; however, this work aims to act as a tool for understand and interpretate the feast as an unique heritage for the identity of this territory.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
