[R]Evolution of the public space in Sofia : from socialism to consumerism

This paper has the aim to analyse the socio-spatial transformation of the public spaces in the capital of Bulgaria – Sofia before and during the political and economic transition from the centrally-planned economic system of the socialism to the market economy of the capitalism. It addresses the main practices of the urban public spaces in order to investigate the differences in their applications on the territory of Sofia and in consequence their respective social output before and after 1989. The research methodology is based on literature, interviews conducted in the period between August - November 2015 and empirical examples investigated on site. The analysis underlines the gap between the different understanding on the term “public” through the prism of socialist and respectively, democratic governances and showed a significant ambiguousness in the implementation of the socio-territorial policies during the period of transition. This research could be a ground for more profound investigation towards future strategies for the development of the public spaces in post-socialist cities.

Lo scopo di questa tesi si fonda sull'analisi della trasformazione socio-spaziale dei luoghi pubblici in Sofia, capitale Bulgara, prima e durante la transizione politica ed economica dal sistema socialista al mercato capitalista. Seguendo questa analisi si valuteranno le principali tendenze di costruzione e utilizzo degli spazi pubblici urbani confrontando le differenze di applicazione strutturale sul territorio e le loro conseguenze a livello sociale prima e dopo il 1989. La ricerca e il materiale di studio è tratto da testi letterari, esempi empirici e interviste condotte nel periodo compreso tra l'agosto e il novembre 2015. L'analisi vuole sottolineare la forte diversificazione di utilizzo del termine "pubblico" attraverso il prisma del governo socialista, mostrando un'ambiguità significativa nello sviluppo e conseguente attuazione delle politiche socio-territoriali nel periodo di analisi. Questa ricerca vuole essere motivo di indagini più approfondite per lo sviluppo di strategie future per lo studio e il recupero degli spazi pubblici in città post-socialiste.
