The thesis is mainly talking about the value of "Abandoned Space", especially focusing on the relationship between the "Abandoned space" which is an outcome of urban development and the environment issues of which the "Biodiversity protection" is a crutial part. Starting from the definition of environment, moving to the manifesto of Gilles Clément, who gives the definition of the "Third Landscape", stating that there are three kinds of spaces including "Abandoned Space", which have the potential to preserve the biodiversity. Since China is one of the countries with the fast urban development and at the same time facing the most serious problem in biodiversity protection. This is the main reason that why this topic has been deeply discussed. With a general view on the landscape history, the idea about "Post-industrial Ruins" seems to be closely connecting to the topic of "Abandoned Space and Biodiversity Protection", more importantly, it gives us a new perspective on how to preserve the abandoned space and in the meantime keep the memory and the culture of the place. Although some chinese cases have already shown the concern of preserving the abandoned spaces, in particular the post-industrial areas. On the way of "Learning from Abandoned Space", we still have a long way to go.
