The primary aim of this thesis is the study of the fretting-fatigue phenomenon in a EA4T steel, used for the production of railway axles. Fretting is a common damaging mode for interference on fitted assembled parts that occurs on the scope of axles de-pending from the axles geometry and stress which they are subjected. The study has been conduced with full-scale axle tests subjected to rotating bending fatigue on a Vitry test bench. There are two stages of the test: the first one, with a stress of 108 MPa, has dured 10E6 cycles. The second stage, with a stress of 120 MPa, has dured 10E6 cycles. During the first stage of the test, axle has been controlled using conven-tional UT. During the second stage the axle has been controlled using phased array in parallel with an SHM using Acoustic emissions. Due to set-up problems, it wasn’t possible to use more of one sensor, therefore it has been necessary to find a new me-thod to apply localization using only one sensor. The acquired Data from SHM has been analyzed using parametric mode and also studying his frequency spectrum using Fourier transformation. At the end of the second stage, axles has been sectioned, ana-lyzed with magnetic particles and observed in the electron microscope.
