Storylistening. Un approccio interculturale

This work wants to focus on one of that many places that seem to tell stories, that live in memories and feelings that arouse in people who inhabit them, living them every day. Bovisa and Dergano are the context that gave rise to a major project, Plug, a great depository of stories, which contains in itself the format Caffè o tè?. The format, designed to give voice to the neighborhood, in the major intent of listening, becomes a narrative instrument, which aims to rediscover and re-tell the true identity of the place that hosts it - an ever present identity, but often hidden or forgotten. This thesis therefore is intended to investigate the relationship between storytelling and storylistening, two sides of the same coin, which are interfaced whenever you come across a narrative action, as the focus shifts from the narrator to the listener, the one who gives real meaning to things. The dynamics of listening’s interest, in the processes of design, led me to investigate the contexts, places, and especially people’s methods of listening, esxploring the way we perceive the information and the reality with which we interact, and how culture influences understanding, so that we are part of a culture - in an anthropological sense, and this culture is part of us. Only through active listening will it be possible to understand others’ communication, leaving our frames and implementing a different logic of observation and a perspective’s shift. The main aspect is then the continue dialectic between self and other, between their own and others’ culture, because it is only by another culture’s perspection that culture is revealed more fully and deeply. Therein it lies the essence of the idea that enriches Caffè o tè? format, to which I wanted to add a stamp of interculturalism, which best suits the recent configuration of the area. Foreigners identify an important voice of the area, changing, in more recent times, its very identity. I understood that community as a collection of individuals I call “travelers - storytellers”, who have a life to tell, a journey to discover their own value system, that emerges from their own memories’ story, their experiences before and during their entry into the area. Therefore it has been undertaken a ‘rediscovery’ of the neighborhood, in a multicultural key, reaching the awareness that integration is possible through storytelling, of which the area has provided the first evidence. It becomes, therefore, useful and interesting enhance what already has been made and exists to this effect. The aim of these narratives is an invitation to a spread listening of an important voice, a means for the storylistening addressed the area and all those interested to a comparison, a dialogue, new worlds’ discovery, new frames and others’ points of views. The importance of storylistening becomes directly proportional to the points of view’s asymmetry from which the stories take place: the more different are perspectives and cultures, the more it becomes important to be able to trace the frames that affect the understanding of the interlocutor. While the comparison with others’ culture makes the owns to gain new meaning, the storylistening thus assumes a dual function : on the one hand, it becomes a means to make target’s preliminary study, on the other hand it becomes the own frames’ measure of comparison, of own way of living and watching.

Questa tesi vuole mettere a fuoco uno di quei tanti luoghi che sembrano raccontare storie, che vivono di ricordi, e di sensazioni che suscitano nelle persone che li abitano, che li vivono ogni giorno. Bovisa e Dergano sono il contesto che ha dato vita ad un grande progetto, Plug, collettore e coadiuvatore di storie, che ospita al suo interno il format Caffè o tè?. Il format, concepito per dar voce al quartiere, adempiendo alla funzione dell’ascolto, diviene uno strumento di narrazione, teso a riscoprire e ri-raccontare la vera identità del luogo che lo ospita - identità sempre presente, ma spesso nascosta o dimenticata. In questa tesi si vuole, dunque, indagare la relazione tra storytelling e storylistening, due facce della stessa medaglia, con cui ci si interfaccia ogniqualvolta ci si imbatte in un’azione narrativa, in quanto l’attenzione si sposta dal narratore all’ascoltatore, colui che dà reale senso alle cose. L’interesse per le dinamiche di ascolto, nei processi di design, mi ha indotto ad approfondire i metodi di ascolto dei contesti, dei luoghi, e soprattutto delle persone, indagando il modo in cui percepiamo le informazioni e la realtà con cui interagiamo e come la cultura influenzi la comprensione, sicché ognuno di noi è parte di una cultura in senso antropologico e questa cultura è parte di noi. Solo attraverso l’ascolto attivo sarà possibile comprendere la comunicazione degli altri, uscendo dalle cornici di cui siamo parte, praticando una diversa logica di osservazione e uno spostamento di prospettiva. Aspetto centrale, dunque, è la continua dialettica tra l’io e l’altro, tra la propria e l’altrui cultura, perché è soltanto agli occhi di un’altra cultura che la propria si svela in modo più completo e profondo. Qui risiede il fulcro dell’idea progettuale che arricchisce il format di Caffè o tè?, a cui ho voluto aggiungere un timbro di interculturalità, che meglio si adatta alla recente configurazione del quartiere. Gli stranieri identificano una voce importante dell’area, mutandone, nei tempi più recenti, la sua stessa identità. Ho inteso tale comunità come un insieme di individui che definisco “viaggiatori – narratori”, che abbiano un vissuto da raccontare, un viaggio alla scoperta del proprio sistema di valori, che emerga dal racconto dei propri ricordi, delle proprie esperienze prima e durante l’ingresso nel quartiere. Si è dunque intrapresa una ‘riscoperta’ del quartiere in chiave multiculturale, giungendo alla consapevolezza che l’integrazione sia possibile anche attraverso lo storytelling, di cui il quartiere ha fornito la prima testimonianza. Diviene, pertanto, utile ed interessante valorizzare ciò che già è stato realizzato ed esiste in tal senso. Il fine di tali narrazioni è un invito ad un ascolto diffuso di una voce importante, un mezzo per lo storylistening rivolto al quartiere e a tutti coloro interessi un confronto, un dialogo, alla scoperta di nuovi mondi, nuove cornici e punti di vista altri. L’importanza dello storylistening diventa direttamente proporzionale all’asimmetria dei punti di vista con cui si svolgono le narrazioni: più sono diversi le prospettive, le culture, più diventa fondamentale riuscire a risalire alle cornici che condizionano la comprensione dell’interlocutore. Se è vero che il confronto con un’altrui cultura fa acquistare nuovo senso alla propria, lo storylistening assume dunque una duplice funzione: da un lato, diviene strumento per effettuare uno studio preliminare rispetto al target in questione, da un lato diventa metro di confronto delle cornici di cui si è parte, del proprio modo di vivere e vedere.
