Biblioteca scientifica a Berlino

The theme of the thesis is the design of a scientific library in the city of Berlin. The project area is situated in the very centre of the city, on the margins of the district Mitte, east from the Museum Island. The new library is thematically aligned with the content of the museum collections and it represents another significant public building on the banks of the river Spree. The preexisting morphologic aspects of the project area are fundamental to the definition of the architectural form of the building. The city of Berlin has been undergoing extensive transformation and hence, the building is showcased as a primary pristine form inserted into a fragmented urban context. It is characterised by its imposing height attempting to compete with the structures of the urban surroundings. The symbolic reference is the one of an urban gate, a new entrance to the historic neighborhood of Luisenstadt. The building is constructed from three main elements: the base, the urban lodge offering different panoramic views of the city and the overarching cube which contains the library space, including its main element - the reading area. The building has potential to become the new point of reference in the urban structure of the city, the new symbol of Berlin.

L’oggetto di questa tesi e’ la progettazione di una biblioteca scientifica a Berlino. L’area di progetto e’ situata nel centro della citta’, sul margine del distretto Mitte all’est dell’Isola dei Musei. La nuova biblioteca si mette in relazione con i musei dell’isola e le loro collezioni e rappresenta un altro importante edificio pubblico sulle sponde del fiume Spree. Le preesistenze e la particolare conformazione morfologica dell’area di progetto sono state fondamentali per la definizione della forma architettonica dell’edificio. La citta’ di Berlino subisce grandi trasformazioni nel corso del tempo percio’ l’edificio si presenta come una forma primaria pura inserita in un contesto urbano molto frammentato. E’ caratterizzato dalla sua imponente altezza con la quale cerca di competersi con particolari edifici del contesto urbano circostante. Il riferimento simbolico e’ quello di una porta urbana, un nuovo ingresso nello storico quartiere berlinese Luisenstadt. L’edificio e’ costituito da tre elementi principali; il basamento, la loggia urbana che offre varie viste sulla citta’ e il cubo sovrastante che contiene gli spazi della biblioteca di cui quello principale la sala lettura. L’edificio diventa un nuovo punto di riferimento nella struttura urbana della citta’, il nuovo simbolo di Berlino.
