Urban regeneration of Novo-Admiralteysky and Matisov Islands in Saint Petersburg Regeneration of ex-industrial and harbor areas with reshaping and reprofiling of city territories is a quite common practice in most of the European countries, however in Russia these processes have just started. In the thesis, the topic of restoration and bioremediation of the harbor area of Admiralty Shipyard in Saint Petersburg is the central one: the project design wise overcomes the problematics of ex-industrial territory and gives a solution, which can be applied, in the city as the way to revitalize industrial zones. Admiralty Shipyard is located in the heart of Saint Petersburg; it is the oldest and largest shipyard in Russia. It is still active nowadays, but, since the heads of the Admiralty Shipyard were planning a relocation to the Kotlin Island and due to nonconformance to the standards of industrial processes, the enterprise has left the Novo-Admiralteysky Island and Matisov Island. To overcome the problem of environment’s contamination in this zone and to solve the issue of the scarcity of green and public spaces, the proposal includes a big botanical garden on Matisov Island, which is an open-air museum of Russian nature. The project revitalizes the role of water in everyday life and reveals the access to the picturesque panoramas of the Gulf of Finland and riverbanks. Surrounded by universities, museums, churches and theatres, Novo-Admiralteysky Island becomes a cultural and educational hub on the river Neva. Keeping the spirit and morphology of the historical place, the Island hosts a media library, exhibition spaces, laboratories, offices, bars, cafes, bookstores and an auditorium. Two islands and the city center are connected with the continuous public promenade along the river Neva. The project transforms the depressive industrial area into an active urban node well connected to the city center and this area becomes a key place for leisure, cultural, sport events and social activity in the midst of the greenery on the riverside.

Abstract
The project transforms the depressive industrial area into an active urban node well connected to the city center and this area becomes a key place for leisure, cultural, sport events and social activity in the midst of the greenery on the riverside.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
