In recent years, the technological innovation process has radically changed: it is now more and more common to see the uprising of Big-bang disruptions having an unpredictable and considerable impact on every traditional business. The insurance industry is a very clear example of this: in contrast with its past as a stable and reliable field, it has currently been remarkably vulnerable to transformations as a consequence of regulation changes, a noteworthy shift in the ever changing customers’ expectations and needs and, mostly, the development of new technologies shaking up the insurance traditional business model and creating discontinuity within the essential traits of the industry. The Internet of Things (IoT), particularly, represents one of the most innovative technological developments and is a disruptive element that has, and will continue to have, a profound impact on the insurance field. The goal of this Thesis is to develop a model to support managers evaluate the IoT strategic effect on the insurance business and to understand, from an academic and managerial point of view, the changing dynamics that IoT can cause within the business models of incumbent companies in the insurance industry. The research begins from the literature review regarding four research’s macro-themes: business model innovation, strategic decision process, functioning and development of IoT technology and traits of the insurance field and structural changes within it. These analyses, essential to fully comprehend the subject of the study, are then integrated with the data collected during the empirical analysis, which has mainly taken place among an important Insurance Company, which has proven particularly successful and advanced in the field of innovation. The proposed Model suggests a pattern of reference capable of supporting an insurance company’s manager in regard to its strategic analysis aimed at evaluating IoT’s effects on business and, through the Business Model Canvas’ framework, identifying the changing dynamics that this technology can cause on each Building Block. Lastly, a Case Study examines the conduct of that same specific Insurance Company, confronting it with the developed Model.

Abstract
Lastly, a Case Study examines the conduct of that same specific Insurance Company, confronting it with the developed Model.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
