The aim of this project is to integrate the cultural heritage of Plovdiv (Bulgaria) into the contemporary urban system of the city. The area of the project is located in city center, where initially were found Roman traces with a great historical value. Moreover, a Forum that was considered a crucial place for the Roman city. The archaeological excavations which have been carried out in Plovdiv in recent years have revealed the great achievements of Thracian construction and architectural craftsmanship in the ancient city of Philoppopolis. Despite all these advantages from a historical point of view, there are a lot of issues rising. The area is an intersection point of layers, defined by different periods of time (Roman Empire, Socialism, Modernism etc.). The goal is to harmonize all these layer into attractive and contemporary public space and also to preserve the historical heritage. The new structure, which would be the new intervention, has to have an easy access and to serve as a cultural root to the whole area. The project was originally influenced by recent events that placed Plovdiv as a winner of competition for European Capital of Culture 2019. What Plovdiv needs is a contemporary public space which should neither turn its back on history, nor lose its touch with the present.
