Una nuova porta tra terra e mare. L'Auditorium di Malaga

The thesis project aims to redevelop the port of Malaga; it is strictly connected to a local reality, a complex and sensitive urban fabric. The case of Malaga shows the problems of a whole made of two different entities, not integrated at the moment: the ancient core, generating element of the city, from which the plot of the calli branches out, characterized by the presence of recently strengthened cultural activities, and the port, driving force of the urban development, that need a renovation strategy in order to re-establish the original relationship between the city and the sea. The project aims to reshape the waterfront of the western Malaga through a process that combines an environmentally sustainable urban intervention and a strategy that enhances the touristic image of the city and can adapt to new needs of growth, as the construction of a cruise terminal or new docks for mooring a greater number of boats. Preliminary gesture is the redesign of the great traffic axis that physically divides the historical core of the city from the sea: as in the best known references of Barcellona or Marsiglia, the vehicular traffic of the Alameda Principale of the Paseo de los Curas is moved underground, leaving room for a Rambla that puts into relation the city and the sea, creating a stitching. The project is set up as a new design of measures and benchmarks that, in relation with the signs of the sea and the current layout of the port, “rearranges” the waterfront of the Andalusian city. The architectural language, translated in the masterplan, puts in a close relation the existing, heavily layered, historical layout with the touristic port, that is characterized by huge areas of environmental value. Coherently with the guidelines of the Ayuntamiento of Malaga, the transformation of the port must introduce cultural functions to integrate the existing ones, in particular a system of museums, a new harbor office, social housing and ad auditorium. The architectural composition of the latter, as element of synthesis of the dialogue between the city and the sea, will be the subject of the thesis; it will be highlighted the public vocation of the port as place of convergence of the spaces for the community and the tourists, that establishes relations with the whole city and its territory. The thesis project intervenes on the space of the present reconsidering the signs of the past and making them their own, structuring the environment of the future: the auditorium is associated with the archetype of the door, as it is placed on the axis on which historically laid the ancient gates of the Arab walls on the sea, that surrounded the city from the port, and represents the expression of a new relationship with the sea. Malaga, as well as, previously, other realities, needs a theater, not only to maintain its traditions alive, but also for vital, economical and cultural needs, projected into a future of renewal: the construction of a cultural system for the port transcends the individuals to invest all the citizens and the project assumes an European scale. The primary phase to proceed in the elaborate is the reading of the present city through the morphology of the historical traces that identify the importance of the port as driving force of the urban development; than, at the scale of the sector, we move to the formulation of the strategy of the new urban door, that finds the architectural gesture in the design of the new cultural center of the city of Malaga. All the thesis process adopts an integrated approach, from the compositional and constructive point of view, showing a particular interest for the environmental issues, taken as crucial to aspire at higher levels of livability of the city. The auditorium is located in a close relation with the Soho district, a restless environment in the scene of the art and music of Malaga, and is designed with huge, flexible spaces, that can be used during the entire daytime.

Il progetto di tesi di laurea si pone l’obiettivo di riqualificare il porto della città di Malaga; esso è strettamente connesso ad una realtà locale, ad un tessuto urbano complesso e delicato. Il caso di Malaga presenta le problematiche di un insieme al momento non integrato di due differenti entità: il nucleo antico, elemento generatore della città, da cui si dirama la trama delle calli, caratterizzato dalla presenza di attività culturali rinvigorite negli ultimi anni, e il porto, motore trainante dello sviluppo urbano, necessita di una strategia di riqualificazione affinché venga ristabilito il primitivo rapporto tra la città e il mare. Il progetto intende riconfigurare il fronte mare della Malaga occidentale attraverso un processo che unisca un intervento urbano sostenibile dal punto di vista ambientale e una strategia che potenzi l’immagine turistica della città e si adatti alle nuove esigenze di crescita, come la realizzazione di un terminal croceristico o di nuove banchine per l’ormeggio di un numero più consistente di imbarcazioni. Gesto preliminare è il ridisegno di grandi assi della viabilità che dividono fisicamente il nucleo storico dal mare: come i riferimenti più noti di Barcellona o Marsiglia, il traffico veicolare dell’Alameda Principale del Paseo de los Curas viene interrato lasciando spazio ad una Rambla che ponga in relazione la città e il suo mare creando una cucitura. Il progetto si configura come un nuovo disegno di misure e capisaldi che, in rapporto con i segni del mare e l’attuale conformazione del porto, “riordina” il waterfront della città andalusa. Il linguaggio architettonico, tradotto nel masterplan, mette in stretta relazione l’assetto storico preesistente fortemente stratificato con il porto turistico, che viene caratterizzato da ampie aree di pregio ambientale. Coerentemente alle direttive dell’Ayuntamiento di Malaga, la conversione del porto deve introdurre funzioni a sfondo culturale ad integrazione di quelle esistenti, in particolare un sistema museale, una nuova capitaneria di porto, residenze sociali e un auditorium. La composizione architettonica di quest’ultimo, quale elemento di sintesi del dialogo tra città e mare, sarà l’oggetto della tesi; del porto viene evidenziata la sua vocazione pubblica, come luogo di convergenza di spazi per la comunità e il turismo che instaurano relazioni con l’intera città e il suo territorio. Il progetto di tesi interviene sullo spazio del presente rivalutando i segni del passato e facendoli propri, strutturando l’ambiente del futuro: l’auditorium, viene associato all’archetipo della porta in quanto viene collocato sull’asse su cui storicamente giacevano gli antichi varchi sul mare delle cinte murarie arabe che delimitavano la città dal porto e rappresenta l’espressione di un nuovo rapporto con il mare. Malaga, così come altre realtà precedentemente, ha necessità di una struttura teatrale, non solo per tenere viva la propria tradizione, ma in funzione di esigenze vitali, economiche e culturali proiettate in un futuro di rinnovamento: la costruzione di un sistema culturale per il porto trascende i singoli per investire tutti i cittadini e il progetto assume un respiro europeo. Fase primaria per poter procedere all’elaborato è la lettura della città del presente attraverso la morfologia delle tracce storiche che individuano l’importanza del porto quale motore trainante dello sviluppo urbano; quindi, alla scala del comparto, si passa alla formulazione della strategia della nuova porta urbana che trova il gesto architettonico nella progettazione del nuovo centro culturale della città di Malaga. Tutta il processo di tesi adotta un approccio integrato dal punto di vista compositivo e costruttivo, mostrando particolare interesse ai temi ambientali, assunti come determinanti per ambire ad alti livelli di vivibilità della città. L’auditorium viene collocato in stretta relazione con il quartiere di Soho, ambiente in fermento nel panorama artistico – musicale di Malaga, e viene concepito con ampi spazi flessibili per l’uso con la volontà di essere usufruibile durante tutto l’arco della giornata.
