Premana is village with two faces. An industrial reality in the heart of nature, where concrete is in high contrast with the green of the mountain, in a borough where history’s traces are lost in the footprint of a modern development of the construction. Place of a young and dynamic society, facing the future but proud and respectful of his traditions. It is in this context that was born the idea of the competition “Ripensare Premana fra passato e futuro”, aimed at enhancing the village and it history through proposals feasible and innovative. The goal that has driven the design process is the desire to revitalize the ancient nucleus that, after being the pumping heart of the urban fabric for ages, now appears in partial abandonment conditions because of the tendency of the younger generation to move to more external positions increasingly decentralized but better connected to the main roads. The intervention philosophy has developed along two different fronts: on one hand it has focused on the recovery of individual buildings that proved to be significant and in a strategic position; on the other hand have been rethought the connections that the village has with himself and with the outside, with the intention of transforming the center, now independent and autonomous, into a functional and interconnected urban organism. This desire stems from the gradual transition of Premana from an almost exclusively industrial vocation, destined in the following years to an inevitable downsizing because of the crisis and the competition from foreign markets, to a vocation linked to mountain tourism connected to the re-discovery and exploitation of historical goods and existing landscapes referred instead to the agro-pastoral tradition. To encourage this goal, during the Masterplan elaboration has been particularly valorized the urban aspect, providing where possible a thinning of the historical nucleus: new spaces have been opened, that are opposed to the strong closure due to high population density, giving more breath and panoramic rest areas to those who pass through the narrow and poorly lighted streets of the borough, creating meeting and aggregation points for the inhabitants. Among the new connecting elements, the one with the greatest impact both from functional and visual point of view is the ramp system, which has the purpose of mending the passage between the heart of the village and its outermost ring. This system was originated from the necessity of creating a vertical element that connect areas at different levels in a context that, due to high gradients presents, is characterized almost exclusively by horizontal connections placed at the same high. Inside this system of ramps and stairs, new green areas and relaxing points are created, which constitute a real sloping garden, reconnected to the system of small urban gardens that characterizes Premana. As part of the improvement of vertical links, it was also provided a cable car, which connect the historical center with the industrial area located down in the valley. In continuity with the previous considerations, the design has subsequently focused on the intervention on a single building among those studied in the Masterplan, to bring attention from the urban level to the architectural level. It is the recovery of a partially dismissed building that hosted the Premana’s consume cooperative, located in an absolutely central position respect to the entire area and the other important pre-existing areas; it is in fact almost at the same distance from the other buildings of the project and at the same time is the only one of them placed inside the historical center. This allowed a successful and incisive intervention following the goal of revitalizing the historic center. In order to give birth to a live and pumping heart at the service of the collectivity, it has been thought to create a cultural and aggregation hub, constituted by an Auditorium and a building that hosts multifunctional rooms dedicated to the associations, in order to respond to the need to object the actual reality that host a young and dynamic population. In particular, the strong and enduring presence of the associations emerged during the analysis phase, highlighting the how the activities touch the ambit of art and entertainment, sport, the philanthropy. From here comes the idea to collect them in one place that may constitute a meeting point and a place of active exchange for the members of the local community. In the elaboration of the architectural project was held in close consideration the relationship inevitably established between the new intervention and the existing structure. This happens at several levels, starting from the study of precise connection that are created within the existing fluxes, until the impact in the material perception, the visual one and the colors that are generated with the adjacent buildings. It has been planned demolitions that affects the upper floors of the ex Cooperativa and of some surrounding buildings in poor conditions, in order to create more open spaces and at the same time more functional areas to encourage aggregative dynamics. Several insights were finally developed to take to a higher degree of detail the study of the functional organism constituted by the building, and in some cases these considerations have influenced and sometimes modified the architectural choices made during the previous steps. The most binding aspect was the project and management of the construction phase, because it has been strongly limited by the mountainous environment of Premana and by the big difference in height, together with the inaccessibility of heavy vehicles to the historical center comparing to a normal urban context; this has taken to the study of alternative solutions that would make the project realizable. This process has been particularly evident in the realization of the vertical connection to the ex Cooperativa, where the excavations to create new working areas, to allow the access of machines and materials, were suddenly reused as starting point for the creation of the new system of stairs and ramps. Another interesting aspect was the development and the subsequent calculations of a structure that would fit the needs of refurbishment: it has been chosen to use an iron structure that fits inside the existing building, a structure that can release the existing walls form their vertical loads and support all the horizontal loads of the entire building system. This choice allowed to reduce the use of concrete only to the foundations and the retailing walls, and the use of a modular iron elements that could be easier transported and moved inside the construction site. Finally, a particular attention was dedicated to the energetic and technological aspect of the external shell; the location of the building in climate F-zone and the big temperature range have conditioned the building reply during the seasonal variations. The entire building has been designed through a dynamic simulation software, Trnsys 17, due to which it was possible to optimize the system of the south shielding body of multifunctional rooms, fully glazed, and the shell behavior. From the energetic point of view, the building has good performances together with lower emissions. This is in line with the new conception of creating buildings as efficient as possible, with a substantial reduction from the point of view of energy use and environmental friendly.
