The work that follows investigates the threshold spaces, intended as the hybrid spaces in-between the outdoor and indoor places. The objective has been to evaluate the cost/benefit ratio that such premises can provide to a dwelling, in terms of economical and environmental trade-offs. In the first section, the threshold spaces defining theoretical concepts are presented as breakthrough solutions in the housing design. Premises enlargement, better utilization degree and multi-functionality are a few examples of the overall enhancement introduced. The second part focuses on the representative case studies: a number of residential buildings, equipped with in-between spaces and located on the Italian bailiwick, are analyzed according to their different threshold areas functionality. Balconies, lodges and leaning volumes, architectural elements belonging to this kind of space, not only can reduce the energy intensity level of the house, but also, through the enlargement of the inhabitable spaces, represent an opportunity to enhance the living standard and the spatial comfort of the apartment. These case studies were used as a reference benchmark in the third sections, where a critical analysis of the single technical elements constituting the in-between spaces (i.e.: shields, windows frames, parapets and opaque and transparent vertical closures) was carried out. The technological options chosen for each case were then analyzed from an economical and environmental prospect through firm released pricing and LCA evaluations. The main target is to build a project handbook: a repertoire of unconventional technical solutions, evaluated form a economical and environmental prospective, to draw basic guidelines for the realization of a threshold space. Finally the in-between space has been analyzed as a whole. To achieve this last objective, a fourth section was dedicated to the development of three different meta-projects, designing threshold spaces tailored for each housing needs. These deigns were environmentally and economically evaluated regardless of the final housing application to allow an estimation of the impact of the in between spaces on the different dwellings.
