I chose to focus my dissertation on the discipline of project management because of my curiosity and fascination with this topic. How much does having a defined methodology and applying it to a project affect the final result? What role does the project manager play during the implementation of the project? What kind of skills are necessary in order to do a job like this? What training and experience is best suited to carry out the activities of a project manager in the construction industry? These are some of the issues that I based my questions on before starting my dissertation and here is an in-depth analysis of the topic. I believe that it is fundamental to have a theoretical knowledge of the topic before providing personal comments, therefore, the first chapter of the paper focuses primarily on definitions and the appropriate vocabulary, along with a discussion of the methodology to be used for the successful management of a project. An introductory chapter to the topic of project management will then be discussed in greater depth in the following chapter. The second chapter will provide a more focused discussion regarding the construction sector investigating the market, procedural models to be followed in order to carry out a project, the specific skills required and the academic preparation of the architect who wants to work as a project manager. Once enough information is gathered about the subject matter I thought it would be interesting to add a third chapter with interviews collected by this writer in order to get more information about the profession of project managers and the skills necessary to practice it successfully. I selected senior project managers in different engineering consulting firms, as well as others who work within established architectural firms, formulating specific questions and asking them about their experiences. My main objective was to understand whether their academic backgrounds affect this type of profession, particularly if an architectural degree may be useful in this field. The outcome of these interviews was very interesting and will be presented in the final chapter. Additionally, I analyzed certain elements of the financial balance sheet of the consulting firms that offer project management services in order to understand if these kind of services are required in our country and what could be changed in order to improve them.
