The aim of this thesis is to study urban agriculture by adopting a critical approach. The work is about the role of the public authority in urban gardening projects. It studies gardening projects in Hannover and in Milan and the relationships of civil society actors with the institutions. It's structured in three chapters. Chapter one will establish the framework for urban agriculture and urban gardening, by studying this phenomenon in the world and in history. It will also look at the property systems that regulate urban gardening and will introduce the concept of local trap. Chapter two will delve deeper into the context of Milan and Hannover and will be based on field interviews and observations. The analysis ranges from the use of the garden, to the management, to the relationship between the gardens and their context. Finally, Chapter three answers to the initial questions regarding which role should the public authority have in urban gardening processes. This Chapter will outline a possible course of action in the future management of urban gardening initiatives.
