A new gate in Tsinghua University : dynamics and social spaces

The thesis here described comes from the daily experience of the author at the Academy of Art and Design of Tsinghua University, since he lives every day the dynamics operating in this area. Being aware of the coming changes that will involve the area in front of the Academy, (i.e. the construction of a new Gate), and becoming familiar with this area, the author of the thesis was motivated by a mixture of curiosity and personal involvement to start this project. The scientific research is wide since the approach to a project like this needs to consider many factors. First of all the new connection, that means how the incoming people and the new flows of the Gate will be managed; in order to do this, it’s important not to forget that the area is close to the Academy and the new Museum of Art and should not block in any way the flow of students and tourists to these institutions, but instead, it’s fundamental to create a streets system that make coexist all the new actors. The author should also consider the management of the area in front of the Academy, trying to design this primarily for students, remaining faithful to the primary goal of the Tsinghua University: to give benefit and areas tailored and designed specifically for the welfare of its students. Last but not least, the author will have to find a solution for the parking lot, in order to manage the traffic and organise the future increase of it. After a series of scientific research open to multiple fields, analysis of the viability of the surrounding areas, surveys carried out among the students attending the Academy of Art & Design, the author of the thesis came to the first draft of a concept; this concept will provide the creation of a new Gate, which blend modern and traditional Chinese culture. It is then built a network of roads and communications services that allows to stream properly the flows of cars, bicycles, and students. The parking lot has been moved to 4 meters below the level of the ground leaving the above area empty and ready to be designed specifically for students and professors. The area has been designed trying to give space to the several needs of the students, considering the playful and relaxing services, combining entertainment and education; In this case however, education is interpreted in the broadest sense of the word, giving the university a “green” underground Pavilion, where they can access a bar and exhibit their work freely, thus fusing entertainment and exhibition. The remaining area has been redistributed trying to mix up areas of complete relax with areas equipped for work or other activities, and with areas designed for specific services, such as a bowl for skateboarding. The project main goal is is to design all the necessary services for the new gate, for the museum and for the Academy, bringing to the foreground what is dearest to the University, its students.

La tesi qui descritta nasce dall’esperienza dell’autore all’interno dell’Accademia di Arte e Design della Tsinghua University e dal vivere ed essere protagonista ogni giorno delle dinamiche presenti nell’ area. Essendo venuto a conoscenza del prossimo cambiamento che coinvolgerà l’area in prossimità dell’Accademia, (ovvero la realizzazione di un nuovo Gate) ed avendo acquisito familiarità con quest’area, l’autore della tesi è stato spinto da un misto di curiosità e coinvolgimento personale ad iniziare questa tesi. La ricerca scientifica è ampia in quanto per l’approccio ad un progetto di questo tipo è necessario tenere in considerazione molteplici fattori. Primo tra tutti la viabilità, ovvero come verranno gestiti l’ingresso e i nuovi flussi del Gate; per fare ciò è necessario non dimenticare che ci si trova nei pressi di un’Accademia e di un Museo e non bisogna intralciare in alcun modo le vie d’accesso di studenti e turisti a queste istituzioni, ma al contrario si dovrà creare un sistema di viabilità che faccia convivere fluidamente tutte le parti coinvolte. Si dovrà inoltre tenere conto della gestione dell’area di fronte all’Accademia, cercando di progettare prima di tutto per gli studenti, mantenendo fede all’obiettivo primario dell’Università Tsinghua: quello di dare beneficio e progettare aree su misura e studiate appositamente per il benessere dei suoi studenti. In ultimo ma non meno importante, si dovrà trovare una soluzione per il parcheggio, per gestire il traffico di mezzi già esistente e organizzarne il futuro aumento. Dopo una serie di ricerche scientifiche riguardanti molteplici campi, analisi di viabilità dell’ area circostante, analisi campione effettuate sugli studenti frequentanti l’Accademia d’arte, l’autore della tesi è arrivato alla stesura di un concept, concept concretizzatosi, in primis, con il posizionamento e la creazione di un nuovo Gate. E’ stata realizzata una rete di strade e comunicazione che permetta di distribuire adeguatamente flussi di macchine, biciclette, studenti e non. Il pargheggio dei mezzi è stato spostato a 4 metri sotto suolo lasciando così l’area soprastante vuota e pronta per essere progettata appositamente per gli studenti. L’area è stata progettata cercando di dare spazio alle svariate esigenze degli studenti, considerando aspetti ludici e di relax, fondendo istruzione e divertimento, istruzione che viene però interpretata nel senso più libero del termine, donando agli universitari un padiglione “green” interrato, nel quale potranno accedere ad un servizio bar ed esporre i loro lavori liberamente, fondendo così svago ed esposizione. La restante area soprastante è stata redistribuita cercando di accostare zone di completo relax a zone attrezzate per lavorare o svolgere attività a piacere e zone progettate per servizi specifici, come la zona adibita a skatepark. Il progetto si pone l’obiettivo di distribuire tutti i servizi necessari al nuovo Gate, al Museo e all’Accademia, portando in primo piano ciò che all’Università è più caro, gli studenti.
