Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the situation of Muslim community in Milan looking for a way to improve and implement cultural exchange and urban regeneration. Done by a student from Saudi Arabia whom he moved to study in Milan and found some difficulties to practice his faith (Islam), due to a lack of spaces of worship (Mosques) in the city and accessibility. The author went looking for a trace of Muslim community in the city documenting it by a photographic survey, and finding that there are many pray and cultural informal spaces, sometimes institutionalized and sometimes not. The spaces are not easily distinguished and hard to recognize without word of mouth or following the crowd. The Muslim pray and cultural spaces in Milan are camouflaging, hiding behind a gate, inside a warehouse or old buildings. Flowed by the example of two authors whom who have noticed the issue and some brief idea about Islam. Milan as a city with data (such as demography & population), interviewing whom who has experience and asking if Milan in need for one big Muslim cultural and pray center or a widespread network of small spaces. With the appealing approach of reusing abandoned or underutilized buildings, following the example of Italian expert researchers, the concept of reutilizing underutilized Metro network spaces presented for a flexible multi-functional use, used by Muslim and non-Muslims alike. With a project proposal and its schemes, plan, sections, renders and conclusions.
