The present MSc Thesis work investigates the effects of an L-shaped tab periodically actuated on a NACA 23012 airfoil during dynamic stall pitching cycles. Former experimental results regarding the passive use of the L-shaped tab with similar effects to a Gurney Flap were explored at the Politecnico di Milano and were found capable of reducing some problems caused by dynamic stall phenomena. The experimental campaign encompassed the develoment of the actuation system external to the airfoil that could drive the tab through deep dynamic stall pitching cycles with Re=600000, M=0.09, k=0.1, motion amplitude alfa_0=10° and mean angles of attack alfa_ M=10 °,15° . 21 Kulite pressure transducers allowed to verify the increased performances in terms of C_L raise during the upstroke and lower peak values of C_m and C_D with respect to the passive use of the tab. Moreover, great advantages are gained for the torsional stability of the blade section for both the stall conditions tested. Performance variations are explored by changing the angles at which the L-shaped tab is retracted, showing that anticipating it by a small factor can further decrease the detrimental effects of dynamic stall. At last, it was investigated the superimposition of the effects of the actuated tab with a high frequency cyclic pitch control at 5/rev showing similar effects to the previous tests.

Abstract
At last, it was investigated the superimposition of the effects of the actuated tab with a high frequency cyclic pitch control at 5/rev showing similar effects to the previous tests.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
