[Amphibious] Bazaar

The main purpose of this thesis is to develop the existing bazaar complex of the Nowshahr city adjacent to the southern part of the Nowshahr Port in the central core of the urban context. Due to many of technical deficiencies of the southern part of the port and its high closeness to the downtown core on one hand, and its negative effects specifically on the architectural structure of the adjacent urban context on the other hand, are perusing the administration to inevitably open the southern part of the port to the city and redevelop it as an urban waterfront interface; accordingly, the most important resultant of this research is firstly to rethink the renewed in-between spaces in central area of the city, and then to determine under what conditions the Nowshahr bazaar complex should be expanded to efficiently perform both as an intermediary complex between land and water, and a socially interactive bazaar. This research develops a theoretical framework for studying the architectural, social, and territorial mechanism of Iranian bazaars along with their commercial functions within the contemporary cities as well as their historical backgrounds and importance in relation to the waterfront interface in the northern regions of Iran. It finally comes up with a research-based strategy and project for expansion of the Nowshahr bazaar as an outstanding model of contemporary bazaar complex that has activated its passive surroundings and became the most important socio-commercial core of the city.

L’obiettivo principale della mia tesi è lo sviluppo del complesso in cui è inserito il bazar della città di Nowshahr, adiacente alla parte meridionale del porto, al centro della città. Alcune mancanze tecniche nell’area meridionale del porto, la sua stretta vicinanza al centro economico della città, oltre che il suo impatto negativo sulla struttura architettonica del contesto urbano adiacente, hanno persuaso l’amministrazione ad aprire inevitabilmente la parte sud del porto alla città, al fine di trasformarla in un nuovo waterfront. Il risultato più importante della ricerca, dunque, è stato in primo luogo quello di ripensare gli in-between spaces nell’area centrale della città; in secondo luogo, di determinare a quali condizioni il bazar di Nowshahr può essere esteso, così da fungere in modo efficiente sia da intermediario tra la terra e il mare, sia da complesso socialmente interattivo. Questa ricerca sviluppa un quadro teoretico per lo studio del meccanismo architettonico, sociale, territoriale dei bazar iraniani, comprese le loro funzioni commerciali nelle città contemporanee, il background storico e la loro importanza in relazione alla waterfront interface nel nord dell’Iran. Essa si conclude con una strategia di ricerca e un progetto per l’espansione del bazar di Nowshahr come modello di rilievo di bazar contemporaneo, che ha reso attivi i dintorni ed è divenuto il più importante centro socio-commerciale della città.
