Progetto di nuovo centro culturale a Gallarate, con recupero e ampliamento delle ex scuole di via Bottini

Our project for the new Library in Gallarate stems from the need of the local administration to reconsider the not enough space of the current library while enhancing the service to the citizenship. Apart from this aspect there is also the desire to recover the building in Bottini street that has long since it abandoned its function of a school building. The above two mentioned aspects are the premises on which this thesis is based on; through a journey that starts from a study on the librarian economical system, it than focuses on urban context with in-depth analysis and goes up to the highest challenges of concrete integrated design and derives the functional program that will shape the design of the new library. From the architectural point of view, we chose to preserve the original façade of the building that overlooks and dialogues with the city while developing the enlargement part in hypogeum. The appearance of the façade therefore remains unchanged with the exception of the coverage, which, having to be inevitably completely redesigned, is reinterpreted with aluminum plates painted with a coppery tone which revoke the old roofing in brick. The main entrance is through the restored building and presents inside the new organization of the spaces that takes into account, although under a new configuration, the existing backbone. The central double helix full-height staircase, allows you to get to the first floor and to the basement, where you may immerse yourself in the heart of library: “the open shelf”. The environment you get into is a large open space that, although located below the level of the road, it is airy and very light thanks to the great glass window that marked the end the new constructed part of the building, which rises up from the basement and opens at the bottom of the lot with a green cover higher than 6 meters and a half. The complexity of dealing with an existing building and the need to extend the area to fulfil the new required features, dictated the need to deepen some design issues, mainly focusing on the technological, energy and structural aspects and demand to continual re-examine the decisions and gimmicks taken at the different stages of the design.

Il progetto del nuovo centro culturale di Gallarate nasce dall’esigenza da parte dell’Amministrazione comunale di ripensare lo spazio insufficiente dell’attuale biblioteca, arricchendolo di servizi utili alla cittadinanza. A questo aspetto si aggiunge la volontà di recuperare il fabbricato di via Bottini che da tempo ha abbandonato la sua funzione di edificio scolastico. Questi due elementi sono i presupposti da cui nasce questo lavoro di tesi. Attraverso quindi un percorso che parte da uno studio sul mondo biblioteconomico, si sofferma sul contesto urbano con approfondite analisi e scende fino alle sfide più concrete della progettazione integrata, nasce il programma funzionale da cui prende successivamente forma il progetto della nuova biblioteca. Da un punto di vista architettonico si è scelto di preservare l’immagine del fabbricato esistente che si affaccia e dialoga sulla città andando a sviluppare la parte di ampliamento in ipogeo. L’aspetto delle facciate rimane quindi inalterato ad eccezione della copertura che, dovendo necessariamente essere riprogettata ex novo, viene reinterpretata con delle lastre in alluminio verniciato con delle tonalità ramate che rimandano alle precedenti tegole in laterizio. L’accesso principale avviene attraverso l’edificio recuperato che mostra al suo interno la nuova organizzazione dello spazio che tiene però conto, seppur sotto una nuova configurazione, della struttura portante esistente. Uno scalone centrale sviluppato con una doppia elica a tutt’altezza permette il raggiungimento del piano superiore e del piano interrato, dove è possibile immergersi nel cuore della biblioteca: lo scaffale aperto. L’ambiente che si incontra è un ampio spazio a pianta libera che, nonostante la collocazione sotto il livello strada, si presenta arioso e luminoso grazie alla grande vetrata che caratterizza la parte terminale della nuova costruzione, la quale riemerge dal piano interrato e si apre sul fondo del lotto con una copertura verde che supera i 6 metri e mezzo di altezza. La complessità di relazionarsi con un edificio esistente e la necessità di ampliare uno spazio che fosse adeguato alle nuove funzioni previste, hanno portato questo lavoro di tesi ad approfondire alcune tematiche progettuali, soffermandosi principalmente sugli aspetti tecnologici, energetici e strutturali, portando a continue rivisitazioni e accorgimenti nelle scelte adottate nelle diverse fasi progettuali.
