Flows carrying various amounts of solids, including sand particles, can be found in many engineering applications. These particles can impinge against the solid walls, thereby gradually removing the material and damaging the plants and devices. This phenomenon is called impact erosion. Nowadays, the impact erosion in flows with high solid loading is hard to be predicted due to technical limitations of the available models. The present work is based on a new methodology, developed by Dr. Gianandrea Messa and Prof. Stefano Malavasi of the “FluidLab” research group of Politecnico di Milano, which is potentially applicable to dense flows. The methodology is first applied to a benchmark case (direct impact test), and a sensitivity analysis of the estimates with respect to different sub-models and parameters and a validation against literature results are performed. Afterwards, the implementation of the predictive technique is extended to an arbitrary geometry, and it has been applied to a case of most engineering interest, namely the prototype of a gate valve.

Abstract
Afterwards, the implementation of the predictive technique is extended to an arbitrary geometry, and it has been applied to a case of most engineering interest, namely the prototype of a gate valve.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
