In this thesis, an Augmented Reality (AR) system has been designed and developed to support physical and virtual 3D prototyping and the related evaluation activities in the field of packaging design. More specifically this AR system provides an interactive approach that allows the professional users and stakeholders to apply realtime modifications in the AR environment to the graphic layout, applied to any packaging, in a flexible way. In the research, particular attention has been given to the packaging design process and the needs of a design firm working in the field in order to build a system that ease and speed up creative and review meetings, presentations and showcase with clients, designers and all the members of the design team. The system consists in the 3D model of the packaging and its physical mockup that is marker based and tracked by an RGB camera. The user can interact and control, in a precise way, every single element of the graphic layout triggering multiple actions from the UI: it is possible to choose and add a graphic element, to change its position, rotation and scale, to delete it, set the color of the packaging 3D model and add typographic elements. In this way , starting from a single physical mockup of the packaging can be prototyped multiple variants. The functionality of the system was tested with different typologies (sizes and graphics elements complexities) of packaging in order to highlight constraints, limits and advantages of the technologies and processes used. Further considerations has been made analyzing the integration of the system with the packaging design process, with the possibility to use the work made in other softwares and update any adjustment made in the AR environment.
In questa tesi, è stato progettato e sviluppato un sistema che utilizza la Realtà Aumentata (AR) per supportare la prototipazione e le relative attività di revisione e valutazione nel campo del packaging design. Più specificamente questo lavoro contiene un approccio interattivo che consente ai diversi attori che prendono parte al progetto di modificare in tempo reale il layout grafico applicato su packaging di qualunque forma. Nella ricerca particolare attenzione è stata data all’intero processo di design dei packaging e sono stati ascoltati i bisogni e i punti di vista di un’azienda che lavora in questo campo per costruire un sistema che faciliti e velocizzi gli incontri di revisione del progetto, le presentazioni e gli showcase con i clienti, i designer e tutti i componenti del team. Il sistema sviluppato è costituito dal modello 3D del packaging e il suo corrispondente mockup fisico la cui posizione nello spazio viene tracciata tramite una videocamera. L’utente può così interagire con il packaging e controllare in modo preciso ogni singolo elemento che costituisce il layout grafico azionando diverse funzioni dall’interfaccia (UI): selezionare e aggiungere gli elementi grafici, modificare la loro posizione, rotazione, scala ed eliminazione. È possibile inoltre selezionare il colore di base del packaging e aggiugere elementi tipografici. In questo modo partendo da un unico mockup fisico del packaging possono essere prototipate molteplici varianti. Le funzionalità del sistema sono state testate con diverse tipologie di packaging (dimensioni e complessità degli elementi grafici) per evidenziare vincoli, limiti e vantaggi delle tecnologie e dei processi impiegati. Ulteriori considerazioni sono state formulate analizzando l’integrazione del sistema con il processo di design dei packaging e la possibilità di salvare ed esportare il lavoro effettuato nell’ambiente di prototipazione in Realtà Aumentata.
