Between borders. Outgrowing segregation patterns while examining and implementing future integration arrangements through the usage of urban and architectural design within the Green Line in Nicosia, Cyprus

Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, has been the command district of the island during the recent era and the signs of continuous change of conquerors are evident; One of the most visible tokens is the renaissance walled city, built by the then conquerors, the republic of Venice. Today, the perfect star-shaped, walled city may be considered as the manifesto of the differences between societies of the East and West since the segregated local communities divide the urban-scale monument in two isolated but functional sides. The conflict between Greek/Cypriots and Turkish/Cypriots lead to division of the island by the so-called Green Line in 1974, a peace barrier that runs through the East-West axis; the primary scope of this thesis is to provide future integration arrangements while examining and eliminating segregation patterns that were created within the historical walled city during previous centuries. While following a multilateral approach, the examination of other similar spaces is taken for granted so fourteen other divided territories have been revised and been benefited form for a wider understanding of segregation models throughout the global environment from the second half of the 20th century until the present year (2016). After close examination, three cases are used for a better understanding due to the positive result of local interventions. Berlin in Germany, Belfast in Northern Ireland and Beirut in Lebanon offer exquisite examples regarding elimination of segregation patterns but also usage of multi-cultural features for the benefit of all inhabitants, always followed by a calm period of isolation. The adopted strategy regarding urban approach lays within the framework of bringing population together through usage of local activities (micro-programs). The micro-programs are strategically positioned within empty and abandoned lots or lots that lay within the de-militarized zone (Green Line) so that the usage of a number of certain type of micro-programs constitute a full functioning program that also brings two ends of the walled city together. The ends of the walled city are characterized by their significance as ends of the historical boulevards.

Nicosia, la capitale di Cipro, è stato il quartiere di comando dell 'isola durante il recente periodo ed i segni del cambiamento continuo di conquistatori sono evidenti; Uno dei segni più visibili è la rinascimentale città murata, costruita dagli allora conquistatori, la Repubblica di Venezia. Il conflitto tra greci/ciprioti e turco/ciprioti portano alla divisione dell'isola dalla cosiddetta Linea Verde nel 1974, una barriera di pace che attraversa l'asse est-ovest; lo scopo primario di questa tesi è di fornire le modalità di integrazione future, eliminando i modelli di segregazione che sono stati creati all'interno della città storica nel corso dei secoli precedenti. Seguendo un approccio multilaterale, l'esame di altri spazi simili viene dato per scontato in modo da quattordici altri territori divisi sono stati rivisti ed è stato beneficiato modulo per una più ampia comprensione dei modelli di segregazione nell'ambiente globale dalla seconda metà del 20 ° secolo fino al presente (2016). Dopo l’attento esame di tutti i casi, tre casi sono utilizzati per una migliore comprensione a causa del loro risultato positivo di interventi locali. Berlino in Germania, Belfast in Irlanda del Nord e Beirut in Libano offrono squisiti esempi per quanto riguarda l'eliminazione dei modelli di segregazione, ma anche l'utilizzo di funzionalità multi-culturali per il beneficio di tutti gli abitanti, sempre seguito da un periodo di calma e di isolamento. La strategia adottata per quanto riguarda l'approccio urbano fa parte di un quadro che porta la popolazione insieme attraverso l'utilizzo delle attività locali (micro-programmi). I micro-programmi sono strategicamente posizionati entro vuoti e abbandonati lotti o lotti che giacciono all'interno della zona smilitarizzata (linea verde) in modo che l'utilizzo di un numero di determinati tipi di micro-programmi costituiscono un programma completo di funzionamento che porta anche due estremità della città murata insieme.
