The thesis aims to develop a new model and framework that it is useful for managing the business of a social enterprise. The existing models are often poorly adaptable to the social enterprise business characteristics since they look at the business from economic side without considering the social impact and environmental aspects. As pointed out by different authors there are no models that take into account both efficiency and cost effectiveness, both social benefits and environmental impact generated. In addition, the social enterprises phenomenon is a growing phenomenon, which is assumed to gain more importance over the years. For this reason, it is necessary to have models that support the management of this type of business. To do this, first of all, the literature on social enterprise has been analyzed. In this analysis, the social enterprise phenomenon, social enterprises in different European legislative frameworks and the key social enterprises' features and characteristics are identified and detailed. After that, business frameworks developed over the years and their components have been analyzed, in order to have a broad overview of the existing models. In particular, three main different type of literature have been analyzed: traditional for profit literature, hybrid literature and practitioners’ literature. Finally, it has been developed the new model considering social enterprises peculiarities and the existing models components. This model captures not only the business economic aspects, but also the social aspects and environmental impact, based on the social enterprises characteristics. The last phase was the model deployment on a real case study: Koinè. Koinè is a social enterprise located in Milan and it offers services for children and community. This last step was fundamental in order to test the model, understanding how to use it and underlining strengths and weaknesses of the model and future improvements. So the thesis goal is developing a new model that can meet the social enterprise needs, considering not only the economic part but also the environmental benefits and social impact generated.
