New perspectives for San Maurizio's church in Mantua. A museum of the Baroque

This work aims to bring back to the public interest the church of San Maurizio in Mantua. The temple, that housed the Theatine Fathers, is an important building that has been abandoned for several years and that still hosts extraordinary pictorial vestiges of the 17th and 18th centuries, such as masterpieces by Ludovico Carracci and his school and those by Giuseppe Bazzani. Nowadays the Church of San Maurizio is an eminent example of Baroque architecture in town. To develop a project that could give back to the Church its active role in the city, historical, artistic, architectural analyses have been carried out. In particular, through archival research it has been possible to investigate the historical background of the building, as well as its urban peculiarities. Also its artistic heritage has been analysed in depth. An architectural survey through laser scanner has been carried out to better understand the architectural structure of the building and to collect all the necessary geometrical information. Since the Church does have a dominant Baroque character, a project of musealization has been developed to increase the value and the quality of the building itself. This is to be completed with a display of different Baroque works of art: from paintings to minor arts. The project of refunctionalisation consists of a permanent exhibition of works of art of the 17th century and of a temporary exhibition devoted to the concept of Baroque in modern times. Necessary interventions have been developed with a particular attention for existing architecture and with the aim of enhancing the building spacing, in order to let it be properly adapted to house particular events such as concerts or even liturgical ceremonies. This thesis clearly promotes future interventions on the architecture and provides both technical material and interesting food for thought in terms of revalorization of the building.

La tesi nasce dalla volontà di riportare all’interesse della collettività un monumento tanto importante qual è la chiesa mantovana di San Maurizio, abbandonata a se stessa da diversi anni. Il tempio, nel quale furono accolti a Mantova i padri teatini, ospita importanti testimonianze pittoriche sei- e settecentesche, capolavori di Ludovico Carracci e della sua scuola, di Giuseppe Bazzani, e rappresenta uno dei pochi esempi di architettura barocca in città. Al fine di sviluppare un progetto in grado di ridare nuovamente alla chiesa un ruolo attivo nel panorama mantovano, abbiamo realizzato una serie di indagini storiche, artistiche e architettoniche che rappresentassero un solido punto di partenza per lo stesso. Tramite indagini archivistiche, abbiamo approfondito le premesse storiche e urbane che hanno portato alla costruzione di San Maurizio, le vicende storiche che l’hanno caratterizzata, così come il patrimonio artistico che essa contiene. Una migliore conoscenza architettonica della fabbrica è stata inoltre raggiunta grazie al rilievo architettonico che abbiamo condotto mediante laser scanner, dal quale abbiamo ricavato le informazioni geometriche necessarie. Vista la forte connotazione barocca della chiesa, si propone un progetto di musealizzazione che esalti le qualità del monumento e lo completi attraverso la collocazione di opere rappresentanti il barocco a Mantova nelle varie forme d’arte, dalla pittura alle arti minori. Il progetto di rifunzionalizzazione prevede una zona espositiva permanente dedicata alle opere seicentesche e una zona espositiva temporanea che proietti il concetto del Barocco nell’epoca contemporanea. L’intervento è stato inoltre pensato in dialogo con l’architettura esistente per esaltarne la spazialità, così come adattabile in caso vi sia la necessità di ospitare eventi quali concerti o particolari celebrazioni liturgiche. La tesi si pone dunque come motivo di interventi futuri sul bene architettonico, fornendo sia il materiale tecnico di base, che un’interessante opportunità di rivalorizzazione e riutilizzo della Chiesa.
