Hail impact problem in aeronautical field: hail impact and ice material characterization

Abstract

The study of hail impact phenomena is of particular importance in aeronautical field where high relative velocities between bodies implies that even small icy bodies can cause both visible and barely visible damages. If, at high-speed, the behaviour of a hailstone is comparable to that of a fluid, following the typical hydrodynamic theory, at low speed, the solid-fluid dual nature of ice suggests that it cannot be neglected in any way the damage and fracture. The characteristics of ice, in fact, strongly depend on the structure and location of internal defects, on the presence of dissolved particles in the frozen water, on strain-rate, with different behaviour in tension and in compression, and on the temperature. As a matter of fact, if apparently the ice seems to be an homogeneous brittle material, in reality its ductile-to-brittle transition, which usually occurs in the neighbourhood of -20°C, denotes that for aeronautical problems all these factors may not be neglected. In this research, the classical hydrodynamic model of ice, used in numerical crashworthy simulations, has been replaced by the new Finite Elements(FE) to Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) combined model, based on experimental tests for ice material characterization and hail impact problems, in which the mechanical damage and fracture in solid ice joints the fluid behaviour, described throughout the SPH approach. Finally, a thermo-structural analysis has been proposed with the aim of having a complete view of hail impact problem.
