The enormous progress in information technology of the recent decades do indeed save us a lot of travelling but the smooth flow passenger traffic remains a crucial condition for working environment, but also for our personal live. The technological enhancement of all means of transportation as well as their permanent interconnectedness augment efficiency and speed, enabling social conglomerations such as cities to be a lot more peripheral. The consequence is a more homogeneous distribution of the population across the rural areas with several smaller centres even in suburban areas. Local transport within these neighbourhoods follows different dynamics than large-scale networks of public transportation which is why rather flexible systems such as car and bike sharing programs have taken the opportunity to establish themselves as alternatives. To date, children have been considered only partly in the formation of such services, restricting parents in selecting adequate means of transportation. One of the most evident examples are bike sharing programs, which - except for Paris and Milan – are provided exclusively for adults. The particular circumstances in growing urban areas, the chances of the Sharing Economy and the social impact of a potential boom of the cycling culture are essential contents of this thesis, continuously being put in relation to the specific need of children. The ideas and view of the children themselves were not to be neglected during the research, which is why a series of interactive workshops has been conducted, applying several Participatory Design techniques. During the sessions they were playfully introduced to the world of design. They were also given information on the topic of bike sharing and its previous inability to reasonably involve children. Finally, they were asked to document their ideas and requests for a public bicycle tailored to their needs in the form of sketches and written explanations. The thesis ends with a practical proposal for a family of juvenile bicycles which could be integrated into modern bike sharing services. In addition to the technical design of the physical product range rather abstract aspects that concern the product service system are taken into account too. The ideas contributed by the children in the context of the workshops were an important basis and have partly been applied, at least as far as that was possible.
Gli immensi progressi nel campo della tecnologia dell’informazione ci risparmiano molti passaggi, e questo è decisamente vero ed è un fatto, ma la qualità del trasporto delle persone rimane una priorità imprescindibile, sia nell’ambito lavorativo moderno sia nella vita privata di ciascuno di noi. Gli sviluppi tecnologici dei mezzi di trasporto, così come la loro interconnessione, aumentano l’efficienza e la velocità, consentendo alle città di sviluppare centri residenziali decentrati. Il risultato è una distribuzione più omogenea della popolazione nell’area urbana, con la realizzazione di centri piccoli nelle zone più periferiche. Il trasporto locale all’interno e tra questi centri piccoli segue dinamiche diverse rispetto alle reti pubbliche di grandi dimensioni, dando l’occasione a sistemi flessibili come il car e bike sharing di affermarsi quali valide alternative al trasporto pubblico tradizionale. Fino ad oggi i bambini sono stati presi in considerazione solo parzialmente nella progettazione di questi sistemi, demandando completamente ai genitori la scelta del mezzo di trasporto. Uno degli esempi più evidenti di tale circostanza sono proprio i servizi bike sharing che, ad eccezione di Parigi e Milano, esistono esclusivamente per adulti. Al contrario rispetto a tale realtà, questa tesi relaziona continuamente le esigenze specifiche dei bambini alle circostanze speciali in ambienti urbani in crescita, alle possibilità offerte dalla Sharing Economy e all’impatto sociale di un potenziale boom della cultura ciclistica. Nella ricerca si è cercato di non trascurare le idee e le convinzioni dei bambini stessi, motivo per cui si è proceduto ad effettuare una serie di workshop interattivi, applicando varie tecniche del Participatory Design. Nel corso delle sessioni si è cercato di iniziare giocosamente i bambini al mondo del design, dando esempi concreti e fornendo informazioni sul bike sharing specificatamente sull’aspetto della sua attuale incapacità di coinvolgerli in maniera adeguata. Successivamente è stato chiesto loro di documentare le loro idee e desideri applicandoli a una bicicletta pubblica per bambini, utilizzando schizzi e spiegazioni. La tesi si conclude presentando una proposta concreta di una famiglia di biciclette a misura di bambino, ideata per essere integrata nei servizi bike sharing contemporanei. Oltre a progettare la gamma di prodotti fisici, si è cercato di tenere conto degli aspetti più astratti esistenti intorno al sistema prodotto-servizio. La ricerca e le analisi incentrate su vari temi legati al binomio bambini e bicicletta costituiscono la base teorica della parte concettuale e tecnica del progetto. Le idee elaborate dai bambini nell’ambito dei workshop sono state una base importante e in parte, per quanto possibile, sono state applicate.
